Just read this interesting article on Search Engine Watch about Google's updated indexing tool. It's short and easy to read.

Whilst this may not be "new" to some of you pros out there, this is good for some of us mere mortals. :)

Basically, Google has updated its tools for submitting a URL for indexing. The new tool, titled "Fetch as Googlebot," lets
users have their site reviewed more rapidly. This can also be used to clear out the currently cached version of your site.

To read how to do it, have a look at Google Webmaster Central:

Might be nice for new sites - that said in my experience even with a couple of crappy link directory or social links Google will pick up a new site in a matter of a week or two.

What I really see happening is SEOs back on their "we'll submit your sites to the search engines" sales pitch...

It's amazing that you still see people selling a "submission service".

Hmm I guess it may be good if you have a dormant page which search engines can not access it, yet these are the types of pages you can normally just ping or link to.

I think this will be good for people with totally new websites but...

Is it only accessible through google webmaster tools? When I click on "Fetch as Googlebot" in the Google Labs it directs me there and once I'm in I can't see where to proceed any further... probably missing something, but then nothing is jumping off the page at me.

I can access it in GWT.

The Google Webmaster Blog does also explain how to do it I think.
