This came up as an interesting topic of discussion at the Meetup last week, as promised here's the article:

No, Google you still can't have dotless, one-word domains. And this time it's final, all right?

A surreptitious effort to introduce so-called "dotless domains" – where you type a single word into your browser to reach a website – has been noticed and shot down.
