Well finally some pople have woken up to domain names and the power of the internet.

Looks like Fairfax Media will be one of the big future winners with their and OMG's 30,000 generic .com.au domain names that are being monetised and "built out"

Auda said they made over $2 million when they auctioned off lots of generics way back in 2002.

C'mon a lot of this is BS,

"Rsvp.com.au $39 Million ( with dating website) Fairfax Media
Tenderlink.com.au (with tenders listing website ) $20 million Fairfax Media
Stayz.com.au $12 million ( with rental listing website) Fairfax Media
EssentialBaby.com.au $4 million ( with website) Fairfax Media
Crikey.com.au $ 1 million ( sold with with blog) Fairfax Media"

Sold with website? The website is what was sold. It is a bit like taking a house that was sold and calling it the sale of a front door with a house included.

A domain vs a business with a website, is hardly the same though. None of those names would be worth anywhere near those prices without the associated website. How much would you pay for essentialbaby.com.au without any development?

However, if you're keeping a list of this sort of stuff, you may as well add the $636 million Sensis paid for TradingPost.com.au ?

No it is liking selling a BLOCK of Land (Domain) with Improvements (Website ) which is exactly what you do when you buy a House on Land. House sales are actually land being Sold with Improvements.

You can't seriously believe that's true in every case.

While I completely understand that there is money to be made buying and selling domains, and even xxxx+% ROI, but the internet has, and always will be about traffic.

Hunk-Of-Shit-Name-Not-Even-Relevant-To-Kickass-Niche-X.com.au with xxx,xxx membership base and over xxxk organic uniques a month is better than, NicheX.com.au naked any day.

Hence EssentialBaby.com.au being worth $4m... Can't say I'd ever heard the phrase until I saw the website. Domain value undeveloped = reg fee imo.

99% of domains registered do not fall into that category because they aren't worth anything with no development. Something like essentialbaby.com.au, tenderlink.com.au or stayz.com.au are no blocks of land with improvements.

That's quite a stretch! The latest valuation on Facebook is $50b. But without the website (and the membership / traffic), what is facebook.com worth? Not even 0.000001% of the value of the website.

Maybe it would be comparable if the house was built from platinum and diamonds on a block of land 100km from the nearest city on contaminated land...

The same is true of any of the top 4 websites listed. You cannot possibly compare the sale of a domain name with the sale of an online business.

Wow, this got out of hand.

I mean, thanks DomainNames for keeping the list and all, but I just meant you should have a separate list for those "domain X with associated business Y" - oh and add TradingPost.com.au as I suggested, that is the biggest domain+business example I can think of.

Somewhere in between there would be FXJ acquisition of OMG and the 30,000 domains and websites.
