Do you check .com use before developing a .com.au domain name?

I was looking for a domain name over the weekend for a future project and of course the .com wasn't available but the .com.au, which is more relevant anyway, has a for sale page. However, before enquiring about the domain name I had a look to see what was on the .com site and sure enough I copped an eyeful from a one-eyed monster and more on a porn site when I was looking to use it for a family based site. It took me totally by surprise as the domain name is not word-related to the porn industry. I won't mention the domain name here because I believe it is held by a member on this site. Do people on here always check the .com use and in this case, considering what I want to use it for, would you avoid the domain name like the plague thinking that it is almost inevitable that someone is going to go to the .com page accidentally at some stage and cop an eyeful?

i don't think it matters as if its not a porn site now, it may well be in a years time.

Think I usually would have a look. I think it is going to be an issue even though only a small % of people would make that mistake.

Pretty rare for a non adult term to be used for a porn site. For domainers it won't monetise very well. Don't think I'd be worrying about what if scenarios.

I'd only look at the .com if I was planning on going in to the US for that product that I was offering on the .com.au

Have you approached the owner & ask if you can buy the .com name?

if its a porn site they probably think its worth $$
but i was talking to an old school friend the other day and she said " if you don't ask you don't get, and if you ask at least you know you have asked and later on the person you asked can't say .........but you didn't ask " , the conversation was about that she asked her father to buy her a house........ he said NO
(pr1ck, he owns 3 )

The domain was registered in 1996 and owned and operated by ICF Technology who apparently provide web hosting services to hundreds of pornography websites. They had a legal stoush with Google a few years ago so well and truly out of my league.
