An interesting point in that article is "...it costs a lot to register many of these domains".
Although that may be the case now, this could change over time.
I registered my first .com.au in 2003 for $66 (2 year rego), which is around $90 in today's money when you allow for inflation. The cost of a .com.au now from that same company I first dealt with in 2003 is just $34 for 2 years.
So mass-registrations using these new top level domains could possibly be more profitable in the future.
