Buying an existing .com.au domain name

When I registered my first domain name many years back, there had to be a close correlation between the business name and the domain name to justify why you wanted that domain.

So... in 2010 if you purchase an existing registered domain name from another individual/trust/company, should your business name still closely match the domain name or is it more open slather these days?

Any other tips for a successful transaction (I gather being a member of drop.com.au for a cost effective transfer is a given tip already)?

From what I know of it will need to meet current policy only which is more liberal than in the past.

There is no requirements now that business names have to be match closely the domain name.

That changed a few years back about the same time the one domain per business name/ etc / no selling rules where in place.

What happened then was a lot of major corprate companies started buying generic domain names also in addition to using their own brand and company named websites

When AUDa decided to auction off generic names it previously had all reserved many of Australia's biggest corporates bought up heaps of generic words with no direct link to their brand name or company name. Now some of those name have been sold around / expired etc and so now its pretty open market.

Most big corporates make you sign NDA's they dont like competitors know what they paid or what they are up to. I have an idea what some went for and its one reason why I got into domaining!

The right names are like waterfront property in sydney.. they only go up in value and everyone wants to have them if they could only afford it.. yes you can buy in the outer suburbs with no view but the most valuable is the waterfronts.
