As a newbie a little detail as to the reasons why would be very helpful.

Term doesn't represent anything really, it is just two term stuck together. The chance of making a profit on this is slim. Look for names that are popular search terms and represent a product or service.

It depends really... IMHO - not every business kicks off with an EMD; for example I could see golfau.com.au being an online golf equipment store.. just my 2cents.

If I own a golf store in Australia I sell everything related to golf, literally thousands of golf related items. I decide to start an online store and decide that I will choose golf.com.au as I believe it is the best name for my store. It also has the following advantages:
Using Adwords Keyword Tool
golf = 1.83 M Broad local earches per month
[golf} = 14800 Exact local searches per month
"golf" = 1.83M Phrase local searches per month

If I do a standard Google search for"Golf" in Australia I get 1.5 billion search results.

Bugger, someone else has already got this domain, whats the next best option.
I decide to pick "golfau.com.au" it has the keyword I want and the au represents Australia, the domain name is product and location specific.
I do a google search for golfau and google, like me, thinks I mean golf Australia and returns 493 million search results for golf Australia.
I love google it can read my mind.
Great I think to myself and register the domain name golfau.com.au . I then do some research on my new domain name and realise that by using the adwords keyword tool I come up with the following number:
golfau = 49500 broad local searches p/m
[golfau] = 46 Exact local searches p/m
"golfau" = 720 Phrase local searches p/m

I find out that these figures are terrible according to domain name specialists and that my domain name golfau.com.au is worthless.
I think to myself something is not quite right here, if a potential customer types in golfau with google and is given 493 million results with my adwords add right up the top I must be on the right track.
I decide to ignore the "experts" and go with my gut feeling.

no point quoting broad searches, if you wish to ignore the answers i guess dont ask is one way to go about it, of course there are many brandables out there doing well which is another way to go about it.

Are you thinking straight? Why would anyone search for "golfau"? In fact we know they don't, you've got the stats. The 493 million results aren't customers, they are competitors. You're market is the 46. Put the credit card away and research for a while, that is the best thing you can do right now.

Hi koomel,

The advice is tough love.

It's not my area, but if you look at the popular sites you'll see all sorts of variations that include words such as links, pro, aus, oz, tips, central etc.

Look at it another way, think of a really strong term and see if the *au or au* is available, it probably is.

These sort of domains aren't terrible, they're just not extremely strong and there are probably nicer domains in this niche if you wanted to start building a brand. If you love golf, have your heart set on the name and have an angle for developing it, then by all means stick at it :)

Take a look at this guest article called "what's my domain worth" by Mark Lye, it goes into much more detail about how to value a domain name:

Cheers,
Chris

If we are talking about a golf shop i would be seeking something that incorporates the term store/shop. The domain discountgolfshop is available and to me is little bit clearer in its intentions, another one which does have less search terms is progolfstore or then there is proclubs

Others may think different than me on this

If I own a golf store and want to go online all around Australia what is the most desirable name. To capture some interest from customers the name should latch onto current google searches. If someone types in golf, golf clubs, golf balls or golf anything I want to rank within those seach results.
The domain name golf is the perfect domain for my online store, I sell everything related to golf. The best domain name is short, memorable and relevant to the website. Golf is unavailable so what is the next best option.

I need all the help I can to get the best domain for my store (HYPOTHETICAL)that will give me the maximium bang for my buck.
All I am asking from you experienced domain name guys is to give me a domain name that is better than golfau with regard availability, and the ability to assist in driving traffic to my store.
golfau is not a good domain name if judged purely by exact matches in google adwords, it is however much much better than others ranked higher by using the adwords keyword tool

Please do not take offense from my posts, I only wish to encourage discussion and debate about domains for the benefit of us all.
I am currently of the opinion that the exact match criteria using google adwords to choose a suitable domain name is questionable.

Fair enough - it isn't a terrible name IMO just not worth registering with the intent to profit from it.

The golf store owner should go with something like DiscountGolfGear.com.au - available to rego, and does what it says on the tin. Attractive for CTR and has the keyword 'golf' in it to help SEO.
