Advertising your domain for sale...

Without wading through reams of AuDA stuff, can anyone please clear this up for me?

I've read that putting a For Sale sign / text / anything like that on your .au domain is pretty bad, and could end up with a cavity search from AuDA...

So I was surprised to see this :

http://www.domainnames.com.au/for-sale.php?domain=wines.com.au

If you go to wines.com.au, it redirect to that page also.

Obviously, this could be seen as a loophole / technicality that you're not actually advertising it on the site that is for sale. It is "another" site doing the advertising

This domain owner has also posted on this forum, I've noticed.

But if you were to advertise your .com.au domain on another domain like this, it is just as bad? Does the loophole work? WIll you still get an AuDA sponsored cavity search if you get busted for this technique?

Cheers

Where did you read that Nicko?

I can tell you from long experience that this is not the case.

If it was so, quite a few of us would be out of business long ago!

Unfortunately there is a lot of crap that gets disseminated (about selling Aussie domains). Provided you make yourself aware of auDA policy and play by the rules, then you haven't got a worry in the world (except if you invest in .net.au domains ;) )

Thanks for the clarification Neddy!

I need to work out where I heard that info originally. I am sure i'd heard it from a few sources that it was bad to advertise .au domain names anywhere on themselves.

neds right, take the time to read the rules and there are some good posts on dnt if you search for them.

having said that I can see your problem as on 1 hand it seems it could be read "this way" but on the other we have domain brokers with business cards, fabulous parking with for sale at the top and EVEN a VERY open PR campaign to sell Sydney.com.au etc and we use to have the NF AMA so I've always been confused as well.

I personally think domain names have been around for long enough now to drop the rules, if you don't have your domain name you want by now its your own fault IMO

eg: there is a Richmond suburb/town in every state of Australia and they all have florists in them but only one richmondflorist dot comau is available , someone had to be first.

At risk of offending someone here I must say that looking at the prices of some of those domains that will be redirecting for some time yet. I was choking on my premium biscuits at the price of denim.com.au. Who would want such a name for it to be valued so high? Similarly, why have a price of $150k for the domain in question and then ask for offers over $1499?

I was looking into the auDA policies recently, particularly regarding monetisation/parking and found this post which was helpful:

http://www.auda.org.au/blog/domain-monetisation-policy-explained/

Having 'make offer' or 'buy' links on parking pages for .com.au is pretty common, you can see some examples here:

Fabulous / Dark Blue Sea:
http://www.foodcompany.com.au
http://www.frypans.com.au (buy link goes through to domainnames.com.au)
http://www.oats.com.au

OMG:
http://www.pate.com.au

My own monetisation platform:
http://www.fruitsalad.com.au
http://www.gelatobar.com.au
http://www.smokehouse.com.au

Etc...

Hi Nicko,

Since 1 June 2008 a domain name licence can be transferred "to another eligible entity, for any reason."

From the Transfers (Change of Registrant) Policy:

"3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF TRANSFER
3.1 A registrant may:
a) offer their domain name licence for transfer (or "sale") to another eligible entity, by any means; and
b) transfer their domain name licence to another eligible entity, for any reason."
Link: http://www.auda.org.au/policies/2011-03/

See also auDA's PDF titled, "SELLING .au DOMAIN NAMES" here:
