forgot password - expired domain

a client who manages their own domain names contacted me today as they let their domain name expire, normally not an issue but they also forgot the password to the admin to renew the domain so the "forgot password" of course doesn't arrive !!

so i contacted the registrar and explained this and go this reply:
"ok no probs, just send us ID verification on a letterhead and that team will deal with it within 24-48 hours "

ahhh, nahhh, sites down !!!

so i gave them sooooo much online evidence that they should send it to the other email on the whois and got this reply " our system doesn't operate on who is, its on the email of the account"

i said " ok, don't give me anything JUST TAKE my money" ...reply" i can't without sending an invoice to the address that isn't working" !!!

soooo, i asked there MUST BE some solution and i got this reply: " well you are not phoning on the phone that is on our records so theres nothing we can do" BINGOOOO, a gem.

so i asked IF we phone on that phone you will let us pay?...reply : YES

so they gave me a reference number and i got the client to phone back on his mobile, stated the ref number and they took his credit card, website was back working in @ 5 minutes !!

moral: don't give up
( sorry but i am not going to mention the registrars name )

This gets me thinking..
Why do registrars only allow one (email) point of contact for a given domain, there should be an option for two..

I find that the smaller registrars of old were more available to help in these situations, maybe because the smaller teams meant everyone had a better overall knowledge and was able to use their discretion more. Recently I had a similar issue with a domain, which was solved with a statutory declaration.

However, that's a great story and your client should be happy you went above and beyond. A+

yep, common sense has gone! but also without rules people will exploit the systems.

i think one of the major issues is that nothing is linked, trademarks are not linked to domain reg or bus reg and ABN's can be scammed as proven by the UBU's

not a blight on auda, just noting people have time to think of ways around rules.

currently it would appear auda has no way of controlling UBU's , and you would have to predict that opening up direct reg would only compound the issue.

I'm sure they have a couple of focus groups looking into it.

PS - don't forget to get your auDA membership refund you can bet those foreigners have.

I'm sure that if they all have the same email address then some lowly worker will get delegated the job. Who am I kidding, we can't even be sure they paid in the first place.

That's all you need to say for me to know the registrar is Crazy Domains. haha

They're about to lose 800 more domains in January. I've already moved 250...
