Drop.com.au

I did a little research and worked out why we are seeing an increase in the quality of good names dropping - especially generic net.au.
July 1, 2002 - Beginning of a new domain order in Australia. auDA and AusRegistry come into existence and the Australian domain industry is deregulated. MelbourneIT is no longer the monopoly registrar and registry provider.
With the changes to policy, increased competition, and the publicity - I would expect that domain registrations spiked over the first few weeks. Although com.au policy restricted the registration of generic domains, this was never the case for net.au. Registering generic net.au domains was acceptable...
So all the domains registered after July 1, 2002, if not renewed will drop approx. 30-days forward plus 2 years... i.e. Aug 1, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012.
So there is the Australian Domain history lesson for the week. I hope you found this interesting.
