Direct Registration Panel Submissions Due this week

This also covers other dangerous AUDA initiated proposals including the removal of the domain monetisation policy.

As well as answering the questions I would suggest people state their point of view on the merits of the direct registration proposal. I noticed with the last lot of submissions many did this at the start before answering questions which is a good idea. Many of those comments were picked up by the media so this does have an effect. Ignore any comments from AUDA that the merits should not be discussed.

Get your viewpoints on the record!

Easy to see who the people are who have made anti monetisation submissions over the years, the illogical talk on here and on whirlpool. They need to wake up to the reality of the internet, domain names and the world.

Monetisation / Monetization is here to stay. Wake up.

Only a fool ( or person who needs to learn more) would waste time proposing to change it again and go backwards in Australia to not allow it.

It shows how backwards thinking they are when every other country in the world and domain name extension allows it! Most of the biggest global Registars etc are all partners of it.

Crazy to even waste peoples time on it. They look very stupid on this sorry to be so blunt.

Tell SEDO they are not allowed anymore to monetise here in Australia and they will take on auDA, the PRP and Board legally and win!

A history lesson worth reading:

https://www.auda.org.au/policies/panels-and-committees/2015-names-policy-panel/2015-npp-meeting/

"Domain monetisation: The Panel agreed that domain monetisation should be allowed in direct registrations, on the grounds that is already allowed in com.au and net.au and it would be too difficult to enforce a complete ban."

"Ned O’Meara did not support the recommendation.

There were no arguments or issues that were raised in submissions or survey responses that the Panel has not already identified and considered. The “yes” case was argued mostly on the belief that shorter is better, while the “no” case was largely based on a perception of higher costs for registrants / money grab by industry, and that it would cause confusion.

The Panel emphasised the need for auDA to undertake further stakeholder communication and consultation as part of the implementation process. Whilst there were suggestions that auDA should directly email all existing registrants (approximately 1.7m), it was felt that more meaningful results would be achieved with targeted market research on a representative sample."

Note these are due Sunday, I'd suggest people try to get it in by Friday given it is easy to forget about things over the weekend.

I have included my submission.

I implore people to ignore auDA requests not to speak about the merits of the proposal. Let's tell the panel once again that they are pushing a cash grab that even most of the panel itself doesn't agree with. They are working against Australian business and for the benefit of supply side interests who still control auDA.

Sean, the way you have "cut and paste" that snippet is incorrect. It reads as if I don't support domain monetisation. Even Blind Freddy knows that I support domain monetisation!

What Ned O'Meara did not support was "Draft Recommendation 1A". That is on page 10 of this document.

For those that don't want to download it, that draft recommendation says:

DRAFT RECOMMENDATION 1A:
The Panel recommends in principle that .au should be opened up to direct registrations.

Paul, good on you for taking the time to answer the questions.

And I agree that there is nothing wrong with prefacing your submission with your attitude towards the whole exercise.

The following is my personal opinion.

Whilst I support "domain monetisation" as it currently exists (and comply with all the "rules"), I am one of many that simply wonder why in this day and age does it even exist as a policy? It's just unnecessary "red tape" - and I think it is fair to say that most registrants in Australia want less "red tape". People should be able to do whatever they want with a domain name - and if they use it wrongly, then there are existing mechanisms for redress.

I agree Ned, the "not bought for resale" stuff in the policy is a bit of nonsense also.

The date has now been extended. No idea of the reason but I'll speculate it is either due to a low number of submissions or business complaining that they never even knew about it.

"The Policy Review Panel wishes to advise that it will accept and consider late submissions in response to its recent issues paper, however any submission must be received by 5pm AEST on Tuesday the 13th of March, 2018."
