Everyday Australians do not want this proposal in my view.

I'm 100% with you Snoopy. But lets not limit consultation to .au

Most Australians are sick of scumbag cyber squatters who just stock pile domains under the rubbish guise of 'monetisation' or 'after market'. If we're going to do this lets do it right. The people who benefit from squatting on domains and selling at ridiculous profits to average small businesses by something that amounts to extortion you can count on virtually one hand.

Let's have the government step in and ban:

1) Squatting
2) Parking and monetization
3) Take over the aftermarket for all buy and sell
4) Ban automated drop catching

The biggest issue in the space will be resolved the day they legislate 'domain investors' out of the world. You'll all be left holding domains that overnight will be worth nothing. Bring on Government intervention I say!

You want consultation with average registrants. I'll take any bet you like that by 100-1 more people are offended by domains squatters than the possibility of .au.

The Government could end this with a single stroke of a pen. Do it tomorrow I say sure 4 people will scream and talk about class actions ... what a joke.

For those looking at how things have gone with .UK

Hilarious ... cyber squatter keeps talking about 'double tax'.

Lets talk facts.

People can already register domains in .com.au and .net.au if they feel like it. There are less than 10% of people who choose to do that. So in reality there is no 'double tax'. It's simply cybersquatters just like you snoopy who want to fear monger, because the money you have spent 'investing' may well be worthless tomorrow.

How about the troll tax squatters just like you take from ordinary businesses just cause they want to register a domain name?

I can't wait for two things.

1) A full government review where they ban cybersquatting and troll tax disappears.

2) A day in the very near future where domains as addressing become far less important and the equivalent of internet ticket scalpers like you are put out of business and you can go back to investing in low rent penny stocks.

I don't think that's completely true @dataroads.

'Domainers' aka cycbersquatters are like ticket scalpers. The more demand there is and the less supply the more they can extort out of people. While I'm sure they don't like the thought of the rising cost to be a cybersquatter, the biggest fear they have is that by increasing the supply of domains their 'investments' are now worth substantially less. In fact if .au was more popular than .com.au then the domains they are holding for the sole purpose of trying to extort $$ out of small businesses may be worth zero.

So what they are doing is -

Lying to forums like this that they have concerns about the cost to small business. If they were so concerned about costs to small business then surely they wouldn't sell domains at hundreds or thousands of times the normal going rate.

Trying to bully auDA into either submission or getting cybersquatters onto the board

Generally creating lots of noise diverting attention away from the real problem, which is not .au it's the fact that cybersquatters are legitimised today when they should be legislated out of existence. The solution is really quite simple. Any entity (or related entity) can only have a maximum of 20 domains. If you have more than that there is a 2 year amnesty to either try and sell them or let them lapse. Past that if you're audited and in breach they all get deleted.

The sooner that either auDA or the government steps in and ends the practice the better the space will be for everyone.

Alternately if you hate cybersquatters simply lodge a response and say that your preferred model of implementation is a lottery or first come first served for .au."

Yes we know who it is, where they worked before and work now, their agenda and who is behind them...
  • They are on the "Supply" side...
  • They have posted on various forums and auDA submissions for many years they are against domain name investors and domainers.
  • For over 12 years they have been pushing in many ways including auDA submissions and on forums for the the proposed additional competing direct .au extension.
  • They have made auDA submissions for over 11 years calling Domain Investors/ Domainers "cybersquatters".
