Thanks Callum.

Any thoughts on CoinJar? They seem to be popping up a lot in my research, and on the surface seem okay. I also try to deal with Australian companies whenever possible, which ticks another box for them.

And a warning to others on this thread - the price will most likely dive once I get in...:p
I have used CoinJar.com.au and acx.io without any issues. Both allow for withdrawals and deposits in AUD.

If you're looking to trade then I think acx.io is the best option in the Australian market - having nerves of steel helps too. Their charts are really helpful and there are no fees to trade, just to withdraw. It allows you to easily exchange your AUD for Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum and Hshare without incurring any fees. You can trade any of these cryptos, convert them back to AUD and then try your hand at trading one of the others, all without incurring any fees. On the other hand, a bad trade can cost you plenty.

Whatever exchange you go with to purchase your cryptocurrency, whether Australian or otherwise, I would advise you not to keep the crypto on the exchange unless you are trading at the time. Get a Ledger Nano S or Trezor hardware wallet as they ensure that your crypto is secure and give you control of your private keys. This way you don't miss out on cryptocurrency dividends that come you way via coins created by forks, such as Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin Gold, Bitcoin Diamond and the forthcoming Super Bitcoin. There a bound to be a lot more of these types of forks happening in 2018 that will give Bitcoin holders free crypto that can be then used to obtain more Bitcoin.

Thanks Scott. I really appreciate the detailed response.

I'm not planning on trading. It's more a buy-and-hold for me with some spare company money, so sounds like the hardware wallet is the way to go.

I've been loosely watching this thread since the start, and they were around $700 when I first seriously thought about buying. I didn't, and then followed the same pattern a few more times over the years, only to see them continue growing.

So now it's time to commit...

Well I'm now the proud owner of 0.18 BTC. The daily deposit limits are annoying, but it does force a dollar cost averaging strategy, which can be good...
Looks like you've made money already. Currently trading at over 15k AUD and climbing on acx.io

If you get your Bitcoin off the exchange before the Super Bitcoin hard fork takes place on December 17 (although it could happen earlier - Block 498888) then you will get 0.18 (or however much Bitcoin you've got at the time) of a Super Bitcoin.

These forks are nothing to be sneezed at. These are the current standings of previous forks:
1 Bitcoin Cash = 1,501 USD
1 Bitcoin Gold = 312 USD
1 Bitcoin Diamond = 51 USD (however Bitcoin holders at the time of this fork are entitled to 10 of these per BTC due to the 210 million coin cap, compared to Bitcoin's 21 million).

Amazing Bitcoin daily chart taken from acx.io. Notice the profit taking when the price hits 10k for the first time. It went down as far as $7,800 and then back up. The next time it hit 10k, things went sideways strengthening the price point and then boom - parabolic!

Thanks again for the great advice.

This morning I received my Ledger Nano S and transferred my balance over. A little scary hitting the transfer button, but it all worked fine as it should.

I've been putting more in each day since that original post, so things are looking good so far. She just keeps climbing...

That's great news. It looks like you timed your entry perfectly.

Plenty of free coins coming via hard forks that will take place before the end of the year:
Bitcoin Platinum
Super Bitcoin
Lightning Bitcoin
Bitcoin Rhodium (full details on this one have not yet been released, however, I'll post an article as soon as they are)

I'd imagine that there will be plenty more to come in 2018.
