as you get older i think different things become important to you and from a dev point of view as i do a lot of outsourcing i have found that an honest personal relationship with my freelancers has served me well.
NOT a sales pitch contrived relationship, an honest understanding of who they are and letting them know who i am am.

not so long ago we all thought that our staff needed to be in the same building, then we progressed to them working from home some days, and now .........well its just the world.

i've always pitched " a whole new mind" by dan pink https://www.amazon.com/Whole-New-Mind-Right-Brainers-Future/dp/1594481717

F me 2006 this guy saw it happening ! it will be the best $7.67 USD you ever spend and its not an affiliate link just good advice.

i've been using freelancers for many years now, its a struggle i'd admit, but my thoughts are if you don't jump on board now and learn the skills to get the best out of it you will have hassles in the future.

i personally think i am struggling to keep up so thats a huge warning to others in dev mode and i am willing to nut it all out.

the reality is , and this is my prediction , very few smb/sme websites will be produced for australian business BY australians, the winners in australia will be the ones that embrace to change and move to outsourcing, i think i posted this @ 3 years ago??

there is soooooooooooooooooo much dev business growth in australia its amazing, but the cost of using australians is prohibitive for most smb/sme's

this area of dnt is a ghost town ! i've tried for years to spark it up but it just doesn't ?

i think we need some people to say they are interested or i'll just stop posting here and look for another channel ? we all know whingep**l is crap so what else is thee?

honestly who is watching this area and likes to be involved? it time to speak up imo

Yes I agree!
The problem has always been finding competent people that you can trust. For every one of these people, there are at least 10 that are incompetent or cannot be trusted. Although there are websites out there with reviews or for feedback, these sites are often manipulated so they cannot be be trusted. Word of mouth is still king, but many of us do not have connections in the industry as it's not a full time job, so even this may not be an option.

Must agree with you here - the real issue was finding the right OS partner but its rewarding once you do.
The model has changed where the dev component goes OS, while the PM work and business development is done locally. Just a sign of the times.

story:
a few years ago i had a programmer in Philippines, she was GREAT, i also had 2 guys in vietnam, a typhoon went through manilla and wiped out the internet so she couldn't work on an important job with a deadline, the bloody typhoon then went over to vietnam and took a right turn and wiped out my guys in vietnam !!! what bloody dumb luck !!!

to their credit they went from internet cafe to across town cafe to use the wifi so they could finish the job ! i lost contact with my Philippines girl for 3 months, turns out her parents country town was destroyed so she had to go down and support them, its a terrible thing but the reality is my clients don't think thats a good excuse !!! for a delay. anyway, i looked after her with as much work as i could give her and same for the vietnam guys but in the end she got back on her feet and got pregnant so thats nice but stopped working and the vietnam guys moved into APPS instead of websites so we all parted ways.

the moral is: come the end of the day people will always chose themselves, so you need to have more freelancers then you actually need.

Add to the mix that you need redundancy across skill sets as well. I have single providers though in some situations.

yes, i moved to that path as well a few years ago, i have CSS people and WOO people. very rarely do i need a wp person.
it simply gets back to "cost V benefit"
at this moment the benefit is winning, possibly only because if sh*t happens i can actually just do it myself.

I can do most myself but I decided a while back to move away from trading $ for time. I even have others doing the PM and business dev work these days for me and grow out my other interests which are left field of IT.

one of my early mentors said this
" do it until you can earn more money not doing it, then pay someone to do it"
very simple but gold
