I have found https://www.sslforfree.com/ is so much easier to use. You will need to update them every 3 months - for your own security, but hey, it's free. I haven't had an issue with them.

They just use this . This is the source https://letsencrypt.org

Let’s Encrypt is a free, automated, and open certificate authority (CA), run for the public’s benefit. It is a service provided by the Internet Security Research Group (ISRG).

We give people the digital certificates they need in order to enable HTTPS (SSL/TLS) for websites, for free, in the most user-friendly way we can. We do this because we want to create a more secure and privacy-respecting Web.

The key principles behind Let’s Encrypt are:

  • Free: Anyone who owns a domain name can use Let’s Encrypt to obtain a trusted certificate at zero cost.
  • Automatic: Software running on a web server can interact with Let’s Encrypt to painlessly obtain a certificate, securely configure it for use, and automatically take care of renewal.
  • Secure: Let’s Encrypt will serve as a platform for advancing TLS security best practices, both on the CA side and by helping site operators properly secure their servers.
  • Transparent: All certificates issued or revoked will be publicly recorded and available for anyone to inspect.
  • Open: The automatic issuance and renewal protocol will be published as an open standard that others can adopt.
  • Cooperative: Much like the underlying Internet protocols themselves, Let’s Encrypt is a joint effort to benefit the community, beyond the control of any one organization.
We have a page with more detailed information about how the Let’s Encrypt CA works.

I'm really enjoying Let's Encrypt.
Since it's inception, I was sceptical. But over time, they've proven to be extremely easy to implement, as more hosting providers build it into their control panels. Recently the custom control panel I use, implemented it. I now can save up to $200 per year on ssl's for my sites. And I've been able to encrypt subdomain sites I wanted certs on but couldn't afford to put them on.

The only time now I'll go for a paid cert. Is for the warranty. If its a clients site. A ecom site, or something of mine I need the warranty to protect my self with.

for me, a low-life domain i'd chose free, i'm talking non ecom, no real threat to hacking as i protect it normally , but going the ssl gives google somethign to look at, honestly i have not bee pro-active in this so far.

but free on a blog or a client that promotes their "meditation services" , " plumbing" , you get the drift the free is all cool.

a client who is selling $1000 bucks a week, then go the paid version, for me its more about the LOGO you can place on the site, YEP, thats it . people want to see logos IMO.

Just curious why @findtim @Christopher -- is it just because of the warranty/insurance?
Yes unless i'm handling people's personal data. I don't need the warranties.
For a safer web/ & SEO the ability to add ssl on every site is helpful and the low/no costs has helped my implement it on all sites regardless of their internet facing uses. Ie running things like Piwik for analytics, can now benefit from the encrypted data.

Have found Let's Encrypt to be good, many hosts now offer it for free. Just need to make sure it auto renews each 90 days as changes in the hosting account can sometimes effect the automatic reinstallation of a new certificate.

I would not bother pay for an SSL certificate unless it is some very large business where the very small benefit of the green bar would outweigh the cost.

Not sure about the logo stuff, has there been any study to find that has an effect? I don't see Amazon bothering with an SSL logo.

And if you're using WP then just add the Really Simple SSL plug in and let it loose.

And then update your Google Analytics for your domain to include the https
