interesting and potentially cool to own but with the auctions not finishing until the end of next month and the asking price already over $NZ2500 I suspect they may end up more expensive then their current/potential values.

that's what I read on the news, it was all over the place last month, financially it makes sense, actually it will give many benefits to kiwis

Say I own a premium .co.nz - say XXX.co.nz and someone else owns XXX.com.au...

Would one become null and void?
Would they both show in the same results page?
Which would be superior?

It would never happen. Perhaps Google could show more .com.au results in Google.co.nz results as its pretty dominated by .com

Of course the countries are never going to merge.

Just for fun, hypothetically both extensions would stand. No way would the owner of the .co.nz have any claim to an already existing domain unless they were to register it as a trademark in Australia.

If a Country split, new extensions are created, if a Country merge, they merge too.

I would assume that if NZ becomes the 7th State, they will maybe transform:

xyz.co.nz

to:

xyz.nz.com.au

the States use third levels so:

nsw.gov.au
vic.gov.au
tas.gov.au

etc.

so

nz.gov.au

but for commercial domains I'm sure there is fine print covering this possible event.

But it may still a few years ahead, given how conservative some people are.

Many countries including australia has additional cctlds besides the main one
.cc .nf plus others are already allocated to australian territories.
.nz would/could remain active

good point, I forgot about that, but I would still spend some time reading the fine print or contacting the NZ registry if I was to buy something expensive.
