hostgator hassles

i've now moved everything i needed to away from hostgator after over 8 years with them, you truly onlt get to see someones service level once you start moving things away, even though i had 3 accounts they got less friendly from the beginning even though they thought i was keeping my other accounts?
anyway, along the way a few things popped up which you should check if you are with them.
they say they backup but there is no schedule so it could be sunday this week and tuesday the next which makes it hard to time your own backups.
the backup overwrites the current backup so there is no past backup kept thus they can easily backup a hacked site and that is the only thing they have to restore for you.
if you have a reseller account and its 100gig across 50 domain names they will only backup 20gig for that "account" so 80gig of your account doesn't get backed up at all, i personally didn't have a problem with that but i was talking to a web person yesterday who has also moved away because he got caught out big time, i got luck i guess.
hostgator sold out in may 2016 https://www.shoutmeloud.com/hostgator-sold-endurance-endurance-group.html , which funnily is the time i started my move to netvirtue so that may explain the lack of service?

So anyway, just check your backup status, as things are changed/changed at hostgator

I would never rely on the host itself for backups.
Always backup clients sites to a remote location at a schedule that suits you.

Host generally charge to restore any form of backup anyway. At least managing it myself that revenue comes to me for my time and not elsewhere.

---------
My backup schedule:

DB Backup to Dropbox daily via IWP. Keeping 10 most recent backups.
Files & DB backup Weekly to Google Drive via UpdraftPlus. Keeping 5 most recent backups.

I'm also running WP Time Capsule on a few sites now with daily backups and don't seem to have any problems. It creates a restore point daily but only backs up changed files.

I have restored manually from IWP files before, and have restored from UpdraftPlus via the back end and both have been successful restores.

UpdraftPlus breaks the files into easy to restore parts anyway should I need to manually restore.

WPTC has an option to restore when you are crashed and broken too, not had to use that yet so can't really comment on that.

agree, you'll be amazed at how many web designers do though or worse i get clients who had a webdesigner who ONLY designs so afterwards they just get left alone for updates etc, never a backup in sight.

thanks john69 for your detail explanation, that was my plan for 2016 but time and other things got in my way so 2017 will be as streamlined as yours i hope.

backing up is painful to say the least. The only time I will back up manually is when a client is using a cheaper host with no r1soft with daily replication. However with root access you can set up another back up for longer term like AWS cloud. Personally if a client site gets hacked I either fix it or refer them to sucuri.

On the cheaper side, jet pack offer daily replication for $60usd per site for WordPress websites.

Backing up is easy. It's usually the restoring that can be problematic.

WPTC does daily incremental backups free. No need for $60USD.

The reason I backup the DB daily is I once had an ecomm site fall over and I backed it up to the latest backup just 2 days prior.

All went well, but the client had 12 orders over those 2 days he had to try work out what, who and where they were...

My hosting covers 4 hourly snapshots, up to one month of data, then daily snapshots for another month, then weekly for the 3rd month. We also provide apis, so you can backup your db and files direct to dropbox and google drive, and we allow more than one google drive/dropbox so you can assign it to different domains. We also include at an extra cost the ability to backup other files kept on the server like emails we call this Binary Storage, most hosts wont have this covered part of their backups. And the restoring of snapshots have been given to the users for some time, which cut down on so many support tickets.

Not familiar with that service. I will check it out. Mostly useful for my "we do it for you" hosting and website builds as a recent clean copy could be beneficial

Can you expand on this? I.e. What's required to set up

backing up of emails: i tend to go the other way and simply say THERE IS NO backup of emails, all emails must be downloaded to your computer, webmail is only to be used in emergencies or when on holiday.

Sorry for the delay, Christmas got in the way.
I'm sorry but i don't know the particulars as to how the sysops team implement these things, only that these are available to me to resell via my hosting platform. I am a reseller for LiquidNet.
