Intro - about time I stopped lurking

Hi,
My name is Richard and I am an Australian domain owner dating back to 1996. In those days you had to beg to register a .com.au name. Not so many hoops to get through now. I'm a friendly guy with a lot still to learn so be sure to send me a message if you want a chat.

Welcome Richard!

I know what you mean. I registered my first back in 1999. You'd think I should have done well but like most others I registered absolute rubbish which has long since been dropped! If only we knew...

me also, i didn't see the potential, but to be fair you had to register a business name $150 back then and pay $150 for the rego, so except for the cunning it became expensive, actually don't recall being able to register only 1 domain per business name??

Welcome Richard,
With such a long time in the industry it will be great to read your insights into your last 20 years of .com.au, Melbourne IT's monopoly of high prices before auDA and some more open supply market registrars with far lower prices, auDA, policy and other topics.
I hope you have some gem names you secured back then feel free to talk about them if you feel comfortable.

I am curious if you where also one of us who helped auDA make their $millions by participating in the .com.au auction of generic .com.au auDA "reserved" names? Many people paid a lot to get the .com.au names auDA auctioned.

Hi Tim
I had a business selling Top 10's from around the world in music, videos, books, and software. Three company owned shops and a couple of franchisees. I bought the domain name topten.com.au through Melbourne IT in 1996 - from memory we paid about $450 all up. I also had a business called ComputerLifesavers.com.au. Completely blind to the actual domain owning/trading opportunities.
Nice to be hear.

Richard use registrars like www.onlydomains.com and others for your registrations now and you will pay $20 for 2 years.
Wow $450 to register names with Melbourne IT. That brings back memories for me also when they had the monopoly! Have they changed at all from their price gouging.... I do not think so.

Melbourne IT's pricing seems to have stayed just as expensive as it was back then! Obviously with a person on the auDA board they have a vested interest in any form of policy which makes them money whether it is for the benefit of their customers or not..... it is also obvious why they want the additional .au extension and why they did a Yes only rigged survey vote campaign to their database which swayed result numbers to a FALSE yes demand vote.

This is a rip off! Why are people so stupid to use them still?
Melbourne IT Ltd
Registration $147.00
Change of Registrant COR $339.00 Paper
