auDA membership roadshows

Looks like auDA are keen to start growing their membership base.

It will be interesting to see how many people get involved.

MEMBERSHIP ROADSHOW

We have great plans for auDA members over the next 12 months, starting with a national membership roadshow – led by some of our board and senior staff. We would like to invite to all members to apply to host an event, in their city.

The aim of the roadshow

We want to hear more from you and help build our membership base, to enable more Australians to have their say in ensuring the .au domain name space remains a stable and secure environment.

We are proposing to set up a national tour called 'Member Plus One Meet-up' - #audamember+1meet-up

What does hosting mean?

  • Suggesting a location that suits the needs of the event
  • Suggesting a theme of relevance, so we can engage other organisations in that region to participate eg. Universities, Telcos, ISPs, Financial Institutions, State Government representatives in the area and more
  • Inviting your interested, local community – your plus one – to encourage them to become a member, too
  • Promoting the event throughout your local networks/social media
What will auDA do?

  • Run the event with you
  • Select the most relevant location and times, from the submitted host applications
  • At the event – take you through some of what we do eg. The history of auDA and .au, our community programs, our compliance work, our security efforts, our research or any number of things we do or have plans to do, to keep .au at the top of the minds of Australians
  • Attract local speakers of relevance to the domain name community and the wider tech sector
  • Provide promotional collateral and merchandise
  • Cover reasonable costs
  • Write a post event wrap-up blog on each stop of the roadshow, including key take outs – for board consideration
Good idea?

If you think it is and you'd like to submit a 'host application' all you need to do is write to helen.hollins@auda.org.au - with a topic/theme you would like covered on the day/night, a suggested month of the new financial year, time of day, location and if you can, venue.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Expect another jump in their "communications" expense with this one.

AUDA doesn't need to do a self promotional roadshow, just stop charging for membership as Bacon Farmer says and start getting proper feedback on issues. That doesn't require fancy hotels and cocktail parties.

<Ain't nobody got time for that Meme placeholder/>

They want to build the membership base? Psst check out the Canadian model!
I think the Canadian model is not ideal, getting a bunch of disinterested people to be members is not success in a membership organisation. It is better to have members, like people from DNT who have joined and paid an nominal membership fee, but are actively engaging and discussing issues. The same principle applies when you organise an event, when its free people don't turn up, but when you charge a nominal fee, you get more participation / interest (I have found this time and time again with our own functions / seminars).

I still think you should consider the implications of having every man and his dog being a member, domainers are significantly outnumbered by groups like the Whirlpool group (who think anyone who invests in domains is somehow a criminal!)

Snoopy you will be pleasantly surprised that auDA has changed since the departure of the former CEO, more will be revealed over the coming months!
And for the record it is entirely appropriate and reasonable for an important organisation like AUDA to get involved in the community and promote its role / function.

Comparing the current 1.7 million domain holders to the wolves of whirlpool is a bit of a scare tactic isn't it.

Who's afraid of a little debate? As long as everyone gets a fair shake then the majority of fair minded people will make a good decision most of the time. Which is not what auDA is now.

It's pretty disingenuous coming on here and bad mouthing the previous CEO without the slightest bit of transparency about his unceremonious booting.

I don't think highlighting the potential ramifications of every man and his dog being a member is a scare tactic. I think we will have to agree to disagree on membership

How am I being disingenuous? I have always been respectful of others views including yours. Why your sudden concern about auDA, you haven't previously raised any issues until the direct registration issue came up. Any person who was cynical would actually suggest that you are being disingenuous about your 'concerns of auDA'.

I have never 'bad mouthed' the previous CEO, but I do believe that there are better people to lead the organisation.

I can't speak for Bacon, but I'd say the sudden concern that many DNT members have about auDA is of course a result of direct registrations.

When things are working well (as they were) you don't need to worry about such things. I would argue the less chatter you hear about any type of governing body or regulator, the better the job they are doing.

When a decision is taken that you don't agree with, of course you are going to more closely scrutinise any person or organisation that was involved in the decision making process.

AUDA doesn't need to "promote its role/function" it needs to inform people (the general public) of what is happening with .au and give actual registrants a say. That is something that is not happening right now.

Coopers, why not implement a sign up option via the registries when a "create' is initiated?
or,
Offer a referral or membership reseller commission for sign ups.

It would be far more effective to utilise existing networks than a road show.

Just one other thing that bugs me about membership is the fact auDA doesn't have a Code of Conduct for itself and its members. If your going to increase membership there must be some clear rules or guidelines for the conduct of the board and members....otherwise you'll get syndicates and lobby groups influencing and controlling votes, or worse...that nightmare of trolls against domain investors organising a demise of our efforts.

Let's just clarify one thing; every man and his dog do own the Australian internet system, Not domainers and not supply siders. It's a public resource and it deserves proper leadership to protect it from minority elitist groups who are protecting their profit margins.

Linking Whirlpool to this debate and their known aggro towards domainers, is a scare tactic and it's designed to keep the very small minority of stakeholders (ie supply sider) in their position of power. The 35 odd supply side members control 4 directors and as we have seen, can easily influence other directors including seat at the table, dyed in the wool "domainers"..

Their position of power is inequitable given the large number of stakeholders of all sorts, especially the largest group who due to ignorance, are woefully under represented.

"Snoopy you will be pleasantly surprised that auDA has changed since the departure of the former CEO, more will be revealed over the coming months!" < certainly not praise and definitely not transparent.

The Defensive/Direct registration issue is a massive issue and probably the biggest in a decade facing the Australian domain system. It's worthy of kicking up a fuss about. How disingenuous of me to point that out.

i really tried to think about this road trip as a positive" finally they are doing something) but then the sun came out and i remembered my frustration about "the energy crisis" and all the wizz bang ideas, noisy windfarms, wave farms, led etccccccccccc and nobody is looking UP , that big ball of light dumps enough energy a day to run the world for years !

a road trip will cost each day enough to keep the domain owners of australia VERY well informed via email, is it just to F'n simple????
so much for rethinking the budget spending !

Agree. AUDA is happy to spend $700,000 in a year on communications (which basically means a bunch of public speaking events, cocktail parties etc) but won't send out an email on the only issue of real significance that they have had to deal with.

I bet AUDA are wondering the same thing as Erhan,

"Why your sudden concern about auDA, you haven't previously raised any issues until the direct registration issue came up. [....Where were you when we got the Governance Committee to undertake a review of the AUDIG Foundation, why are you only interested since we decided to screw up .com.au??]".
