.AU Analogies

On a lighter note i figured a thread with just analogies about whats happening could get entertaining as the months progress.
analogy: "a form of reasoning in which one thing is inferred to be similar to another thing in a certain respect"

this decision is like ........................

Going to be funny when all the government ministers who use their personal names as .com.au have to fight against others with the same name for the .au equivalent.
What right do they have over the .au that others with the same name don't have? Will they be made to outbid the others at another auction rip off?
Most politician names are also the names of many other people in Australia.
This just means all of these people will need to defense register the .au version and who will pay for this? The Australian taxpayer probably..and chances are they are not registered at an affordable registrar but someone like perhaps some of the more expensive the "board" member registrars Melbourne IT.
AusRegistry and many others must be celebrating for themselves!

Auda Budget ! Let's think how we can remain a not for profit with the increased revenues.... mmm ... Business class overseas trips to domain name meetings, ....Give away money to causes unrelated to the management of domain names which is what we are supposed to just do and why we got the rights to manage the system originally......
https://www.auda.org.au/about-auda/our-org/budget/ The following is a summary of auDA's annual budget.

Does anyone else think the survey was written to give a yes result? How can it seriously be a question would people like to register a .au name. Anyone would love to register realestate.au, cars.au, trucks.au, carsales.au, rsvp.au, news.au etc etc.

These results are a joke if this is the evidence used to bring in such a change!

Surveyquestion
.auDomainAdministrationLtd(auDA)is thepolicy authorityandindustry self‐regulatorybodyfor.audomainnames.

Currently, all.au domain names mus tbe registered underasecondlevel domain–forexample,yourname.com.au OR yourname.org.au OR yourname.net.auandsoon auDAis consideringintroducingchangeswhichwouldallowpeopleto register directly under.au–forexample,yourname.au.

If you had the choice to register a domain name directly under.au–for example, yourname.au–how likely would you be to do so?

Absolutely! The survey question, without any further explanation, is quite useless. As a small business owner, I would have to answer YES, not because I would want this domain or it would be useful, but I would be forced to buy it for defensive purposes. This would add ZERO value to me, plus an additional annual cost.

It’s quite obvious that whoever thought of the wording of this question, either had a self-interest in getting a YES vote, or they are incompetent as the response does not distinguish between forced defensive registration, and those that actually WANT .au domain.

Hey Ttfan, I think you are missing the point about the purpose of the survey, if the purpose of the survey you refer to, was to determine whether direct registrations are a good idea, then the survey question would not have been the right one to ask HOWEVER, if you read the auDA press statement it makes it clear that this was not the purpose:

Rather, the purpose of the market research was to assess the likely level of market demand. To this end, it was agreed to conduct a simple, one question survey aimed at finding out whether or not people would register “yourname.au” if it was available.

The Names Panel already did several rounds of public consultations, so the Panel had already made a determination on direction registrations before this question was asked.

well then i think we all missed the point, it looks like a contrived question to get an answer that can then be misrepresented as people just positively wanting .au
the reality its asking a loaded question without any background so IMO just don't ask it.
if i do a survey that asks do you want a car? that doesn't mean i want a mercedes !

i kinda meant this thread was for analogies like :

" if it smells like a pig, looks like a pig, then its a pig" LOL rather then serious stuff

It was a pathetic survey as it was a question without context.
They might just as well have asked would you buy a kilo of gold for half price.
Shamefully they took it as a greenlight to bulldoze their agenda.

Not much point complaining about it now.

Put your energy towards working out how you can benefit from the change.
Actually is is not set in stone yet. Things can be changed when they need to be with proper processes and some noise...

The board could change it's mind as easily as it changes CEO or Chairman.
They want you to think it's done and dusted.
It is not done and dusted. A lot of Politicians are now wondering about their own personal .com.au names and somone else getting the .au version.

Once you let people see how it can affect them they have a far different view... :)

Department of Communications can no longer just attend Auda meetings for the free drinks and to tick the box they attended. They really need to wake up.

There is a new Auda Ceo. Phone him and Jo Lim to complain!

true, but i think changing their mind is like trying to get tara brown go back to lebenon for a holiday.

i think the way is via the other authorities, Department of Communications or whoever else plays a role.
inform everyone you can and see what pressure can be exerted

What do you mean, which politicians? I don't think many are going to care.

They've been pushing for .au haven't they?
