SmarterASP.net - My Experience

I am in the process of planning to relaunch an ASP.NET site I've had for a while and wanted to share my thoughts about SmarterASP.net.

I'm not affiliated with any hosting company.

I’ve trialed HostGator and WinHost for ASP.NET shared hosting and they were alright and I've also used Arvixe and found HostGator to be more user friendly than both of these.

However, my recent experience with SmarterASP.net trumps the others I mentioned.

I trialed the ‘.net advance’ plan that cost me about $60.00 for 12 months.

The hosting GUI is the best I’ve used by far and mainly because it was intuitive, fast and provided features I’ve not seen before such as web connect for SQL that made it easy accessing/editing my database without using SQL server management software.

Importing databases, creating backups, editing files and permissions were much faster and their FTP speeds seemed better but I didn’t compare these. They also have an FTP browser extension I thought was pretty good which I used with Firefox.

Sounds about as secure as... windows

Was there something specific that drove your need for Windows hosting? Just curious.

Not really but the developers I worked with specialised in ASP.NET + Windows tech and the cost was a factor and it cost less to develop as I was building the site using their established coding framework.

I haven't touched ASP since I was co-erced into coding an online store with it back in 2004. Just curious because there are real world situations where you would need to use a Windows native API or software package. Still puzzles me when I see .asp serving a webpage though

Just out of curiosity if you were going to build a site what would be your preference? Do you prefer WordPress etc…

I haven't touched ASP since I was co-erced into coding an online store with it back in 2004. Just curious because there are real world situations where you would need to use a Windows native API or software package. Still puzzles me when I see .asp serving a webpage though

although I love PHP, wordpress, woocommerce, I do have clients with ASP as that's where I began( html actually )[ commodore 64 actually 1982], I can see clear distinctions as to why a business would use ASP instead of PHP and what I find is VERYYYYYYY complex shopping carts do work FARRRR better with ASP, that being said they also come with FARRRRR greater costs.

pretty much add a zero for everything you do in programming, $100 in PHP becomes $1000 in ASP.

Big boy retailers use both Magento Enterprise (PHP) and Sitecore (.NET) for their online stores. Not sure if I would say there is a solid reason to choose one over the other. Sometimes for interopability, but that's not as much of as issue these days with the proliferation of APIs.

Having said that, some financial insitutations and traditional organisations that deal with sensitive data, and who are paranoid about security will often only work with partners that use .NET for one reason or another.. none of which makes much sense to me.

If you were going a custom build then I'd say PHP or Ruby all the way.

yes to all, i call it "NORTON theory" shit software with great marketing.

and i mean that for both php and asp

it just gets back to what the BEST salesman sells the clients.
