I don't think people want to pay for advice. They want the advice for free then they use it to make a judgement about whether to use your services or even to commence a project.

They don't see the connection between advice and consultancy work.

you book an APPOINTMENT with a lawyer, accountant, financial advisor, doctor, dentist etccccccc so why not a website developer?

Because a Web Developer could be considered a trade like a painter, plumber, electrician, landscape gardener etc.

Web Developers are not professional occupations like those you listed. They are far from it. Most of those professions are regulated by formal qualifications, licencing requirements and being a member of a professional body.

On the other hand you can get free advice and a quote from a painter, plumber etc ... they even come to your house at their own expense.

I know where your coming from about wanting to bill for consultancy work but asking for $132p/h is a bit steep I think.

Most of the advice web developers give can be found anywhere on the internet with some research. We are not doing something so unique which requires a customer paying $132p/h but that's just my opinion.

I think you need to be a bit more relaxed when it comes to new clients as needs to be a bit of a trust building exercise in the initial stages. It's always hard to pick what type of client somebody will be from initial conversations, and I don't blame them for wanting to get to know you a bit better as well.

The frustrating part is ongoing clients that continually take the piss (and that wasn't you Tim). These types are usually pretty consistent with their M0, long phone calls, lots of little jobs that they don't want to pay for and then very slow to pay. This is the stuff that you need to nip really quickly, but it's not always easy

ashman when my washing machine stopped working the guy said " for $40 i'll come have a look " , considering he was in the house just 10 minutes ... given traveling time he's on $132 and hour

i agree with dave maybe more delicate next tiem but i thought i'd try it.

My accountant lectured me for not charging for advice once, and it opened my eyes a little.

There is advice and then there is professional advice. If you are doing some kind of analysis, or using your expertise to value add then you need to be paid.

Yes, lots of things can be looked up on the internet, but that research takes time and experience to implement.

So just because something takes you 15 minutes to complete, it does not automatically mean it is only worth 15 minutes pay!

For example, I migrated a site from one hosting provider to another and cleaned the files of malware. In fact I put in a support request with VentraIP for a cPanel transfer and they did it. Total time spent was 15 mins, but I didn't charge $30, I billed for $300~ and the client was wrapped.

I had a cold call come to me today in the form of an email. Guy wanted my services for $33 an hour. I nicely told him I'm not the person for your job.
