Trends - people typing in the domain

What are the long term trends on people actually typing in domain names to find a site? I would expect the trend to be downwards, as a quick Google of the name usually gives you the right site immediately anyway.

If the trend is downwards, it would diminish the value of EMDs, wouldn't it?

Any thoughts?

I think emd's will hold or increase in value because as we stop typing and start talking to our mobiles and laptops etc google etc will move back towards emd's

just my opinion.

I think the reality is that Telstra would be the ONLY website allowed to place an adwords that comes up for a search of Telstra so WHY even do it? because of organics, but even then surely that size site would rank first?

what surprised me is that they didn't control every listing on the first page.

I'm not sure I can see the logic in that.

That's a different thing altogether... might be a good topic for a new thread.

Ultimately a domain is an address, it helps people find you.

Just like a pizza delivery person needs an address to deliver your cheesey dinner - a business card, billboard, magazine or tv ad needs a domain for customers to be able to find your online business.

The core determinent of value for a domain is what it offers the potential buyers. A short, memorable, easy to say and spell domain still holds great value for brands.

Would you put "Google: Pet Shop Australia"on a business card, or PetShop.com.au?

High quality exact match domains are valuable for a lot of reasons, not just the potential for type-in traffic.

radio advert in the car today ended in " ... just google city honda or follow us on facebook "

the results don't suggest success and thus a good emd will work better for you in traditional marketing especially when cityhonda.com.au is available for handreg

but honda.com.au prefer to use a "/city" folder in adwords and a "city. " subdomain in organics ??????????????????

i'm not off track on the lead subject, these are trends so called professional marketers are using which i keep seeing.

Thanks for the case study showing what not to do!

It's a stupid approach, but a larger company like Honda is far more likely to get away with it (that is, less likely to lose lots of traffic to a competitor in the Google results page).

Brands are more likely to see EMD domains as been favorable for marketing campaigns compared to worrying about type ins. This is after helping many brands acquire generic domains.

I think so, don't have any data on it though, only revenue data. Personally I use Google a lot more instead of directly typing in a site especially if the web address is not easy to type.

Yes, but you've got lots of other factors as well that will effect values, Facebook/twitter, growing internet usage, growing wealth in some countries, google ranking changes.

If you look at recent history the main thing pushing prices down, (especially noticeable for .com.au) is Google updates diminishing the ranking value of EMD's.
