Australian Domain Name Sales Trends

Recently we decided to look at the number of domains sold each week along with the price to see if there are any interesting trends. As you can see there are only 40+ data points, which isn't enough to show any real trends at this stage - but we plan to continue updating it. I know a few members already do this themselves, but we thought we'd share it for anyone else interested.

It's interesting to see how much it fluctuates on a daily basis.

We've updated today with little more analysis. We've also included the min, max and median prices as suggested Chris C so hope that helps :)

UPDATE: We'll be creating a page for this, for now it's in one PDF:

https://www.dntrade.com.au/Australian-Domain-Sales.pdf

Cheers,
Chris

This is a great idea!

You should just have a page on DnTrade dedicated to it and update it weekly or something.

Thanks for all the feedback and sharing everyone!

We've now added in a table above showing total value, volume and average prices as requested for each week.

We are working to moving this onto a standalone page.

Cheers,
Chris

I think the really fascinating data you'd want to try and get your hands on is repeat sales via Snapper...

That would give a great indication of the value change in domains - because at present this sort of graph can't factor for "domain quality"...

Obviously this is very difficult without historical data - have you spoken with NetFleet or DomainerIncome about getting some historical data?

i think NF posted some good stats previously but i can't find it, which mentioned repeat sales data.

i actually think you commented on it so maybe check your own posts in your CP

maybe NF could do it as a yearly post? end of financial year type thing?

Chris,

I would be happy to provide you with historical data, also happy to provide you with a list of 180 repeated sales from the first 6 months of this year.

Spoiler alert... the 180 repeat sales showed an overall increase in value... I can almost hear all the cynics out there groaning out load "of course HE would say that" so perhaps it will be more meaningful if someone independent was to analyse the data (which we have been making public on a daily basis) and then report back to all of us on any trends they find.

The Netfleet data is useful, but I am thinking that I might try to aggregate some anonymous data of sales figures (from brokers).

I handle many large .au sales each year and I know a few other people from this forum are involved in large sales. As I have said before the large deals are very rarely reported due to confidentiality.

Hi all, I've made the latest update which now includes some previous catalogue sales that weren't in the last version.

So we've now got our first month of combined Australian domain sales data peoples! Please find the update above :)

Interesting to note, that in one month of combined published .au domain drops and catalogue sales data (11 Jun - 10 Jul 2013) there was a total volume of 1278 domains sold with a total value of $93,794.

It will be interesting to keep tracking this month by month so stay tuned.

Cheers,
Chris

average price per domain would be interesting data.
I'd be interested to see the "median" price over time... the mean prices can be biased by larger one time sales.

Or if you wanted to get REALLY fancy you could start tracking the "quality" of the domains and the price they are achieving as well.

You could create a simplified value of domain quality by doing something like multiplying "exact searches by CPC by ad competition" to give a rough ideas of quality and then see if the quality of domains dropping is decreasing over time or if the price paid is increasing relative to domain quality...

...just a thought.
