Grab some for $3. Transfer them to where you want, pay full price transfer at your preferred registrar. You still got a bonus year for $3 :)

I would image they wouldn't get a lot of hand registered .com' domains anymore, And if they did they would be of poor quality, random crap. They will end up just giving them away. *laughs*

Good luck with finding a good one.

if you think that way you are short sighted, there are soooooo many great domains still available in mostly 2 word combos, forget the 1 word domain
and that doesn't say the .com hand reg era is dead.

Yeah, Tim is right, it is short sighted. The thing to keep in mind with new registrations is that there is constantly new products and services coming into the market which creates new keywords that would not have made sense 10-5-1 years ago and therefore are unregistered. You want to keep an eye on what's coming down the pipeline and what sort of keywords will make sense when people begin to search for that stuff.

For example, let's look at World of Warcraft. There are a tonne of keyword related domains that drive huge amounts of traffic that no-one would've thought of prior to 2004. Blizzard is currently working on their next MMO (title yet unknown) but once the name is released, there are going to be a tonne of domains available that will drive huge amounts of traffic if you're quick enough and have the insight to pick the right ones.

Thanks for pointing out my ignorance. :) You are both right tho. Although it was meant to be taken with a little sarcasm in there. I guess it's hard to get that across with just words.
