Interesting post I feel is worth reading, in 10 years where will we see search & the web?

Some are feeling that API development is the way of the future, and companies should be further involved with API development.

Interesting post..

So he is predicting that in the future, a few big players will have large APIs and the rest of us will interact with those web services to get the information we seek/need rather than search in the traditional sense.

Reminds me of this prediction:

Semantic/contextual/intelligent web searching will kill Google if Google doesn’t disrupt itself. Eventually. Google search is a terrible experience for normal people. They don’t know which links they can trust. Some service in the future is going to curate the top 100,000 or 1,000,000 queries into a list of great, precise results. Siri would be a great interface into that kind of system. “Siri, what camera should I buy?” would probably give better results than this. (How that curation or improvement in quality will happen is anyone’s guess.)

I also read another article back when the first iPhone came out (which I can't find now), which predicted that the web will shrink over time thanks to the interface of such devices "walling" users in. Basically it suggested that large corporations will pre-purchase the rights to the default apps that are installed on a new smartphones, and smaller businesses will find it harder to compete.

This prediction holds true my capitalist philosophical belief that "in the long run the middle man always gets f##ked"...



The internet just speeds up this process because it helps remove or reduces the costs of information asymmetries.

default apps are like search rankings but you can move them, perhaps in the future that won't be the case.

i'm finding with my kids more and more apps appearing on my iphone and ipad , this "sliding" is driving me mental, i have a friend that has sooooo many i think he should throw his phone away and start again, its like having every favourite on your laptop screen, its crazy.

i think we are still unpredictable enough to continue search, life changes and creates different interests, voice i think will be the big mover, siri is simply a faster way to get things done and its very obvious and logical to head down that path.
i see api's as significant but no need to rush out and get all your clients to create one

Indeed. Being ready for the transition is obviously the prudent thing to do, but there is still FAR more money to be made from the current/old website and search technology...

... and unfortunately the world always changes a LOT slower than we all expect.

I don't see most businesses needing their own APIs any time soon. I can't really see how that would make sense for the majority of SMEs.

Having said that, it makes perfect sense that more of these kinds of businesses will utilise 3rd party APIs.
