Hi all

My name's David and I've been domaining for about 5 years, the first 3 part-time while I worked a job and the last couple full time from home. During this time I've bought and sold over 10,000 domains. At one stage I had a portfolio of around 4,000 names but have trimmed back significantly since.

During the past year or so I've also begun to focus on development. This is how I got into the .au domain space. Once I finish off current projects and upload the sites I'll have around 150 websites online (mainly mini-sites). They are a mixture between US & AU focused sites. I think 150 is more than enough for now so will begin to focus more on SEO and backlink building rather than the creation of new sites.

At the moment I'm really focused on end user selling of my domains though as this is keeping me working 80+ hour weeks and bringing in very good money - currently averaging about $25,000 US per month in sales and rising :) I focus mainly on volume rather than really large sales. The largest sale I've made this month was for $5,000 US but most are in the $300 - $1,000 range.

I have made good money in the past by selling wholesale (LLLL.com, LLLL.net, etc). However these days I'm focused on keyword rich domains that have great end user prospects as this is where the real money is and is far less speculative and reliant on a good economy.

Am 25 yo and have been married for just over 5 years. My wife and I had our first baby just over 4 months ago, a beautiful baby girl named Charlotte. We live in a small town called Fernvale about half an hour's drive west of Ipswich, Qld.

I've had a bit of a look around the forum and am looking forward to getting to know you all as time goes by.

Best regards
David

Welcome to the forum David. Looks like you got started quite young, and have made a good living doing what you love (albeit the long hours). Congratulations on your baby girl!

A big welcome David. It's really great to have new members - and particularly someone of your experience.

It also wonderful to have a fellow seller on board (and a fellow Queenslander as well). You've obviously done very well, so good on you!

Best wishes, Ned

P.S. And I share with Soj in congratulating you on your first child! :)

Hi David,

Glad to know that you've registered and now posting.
Didn't know you were only 25 when i spoke on the phone with you... you did start very young.
I'm 30 now... and still haven't yet proposed to my gf.

But yeah, the more people participate in this forum, the better.

Thanks for the welcome Ross. I forgot to mention that Ross got me to this forum and helped in sorting out a problem to get me active.

Hi David,

Welcome along.

If you are proactively selling your domains, are they listed on NetFleet? If not, would it be possible for you to list them here at DNTrade or NetFleet so we can all have a look through?

Thanks

Hi Shawn

I've never sold any .com.au domains. All the domains I have sold and sell are .com / .net / .org and the only .com.au domains I do have are for development and don't have much value until they're developed so it's no use listing for sale yet.

Hi David,
Welcome to forum and if your down Wynnum way anytime, give me a buzz for a coffee or beer, depends on the time of day of course. Your half my age, but sounds like you've accomplished more than me. What a great start in life for you and the family, well done.

Hi Don

I'll actually be having lunch at the Wynnum boat club in a couple of weeks time. However it's for a relative's birthday so probably won't get a chance to catch up then as I'll be with other family. Sounds like a plan sometime in the future though.

I wouldn't say I've necessarily accomplished more than you. We have all accomplished different things in life and domaining certaintly isn't everything in life. Being young there are certaintly things I can learn from those older who have been through things before.

Looks like you've got some experience developing Aussie mini-sites also. Could be good to discuss this if we get together and throw some ideas around.

Below are just a few of my Aus websites (won't hyperlink incase that's not allowed) :

cheap-web-hosting.net.au
jewellerychain.com.au
golf-drivers.com.au
hair-fashion.com.au
airport-car-hire.com.au
babystrollers.net.au
broadband-phone.com.au

Hi David, welcome to DN Trade :)

You say you're working 80 hour weeks, most of which is spent selling to end users. Just wondering what your average day consists of? Is it mostly searching for potential leads on Google and then contacting them with an 'introduction' email letting them know why the domain is valuable to them and how much you'd be willing to let it go for etc?

How much do you use the phone, and how much is exclusively email?

70% of my day/week would consist of visiting prospect websites and contacting them by email to try and sell a domain that would benefit their company. Thankfully I don't have to find end users as I use a software script that automatically provides me with all I need. It does cost me a few hundred US$ a day but well worth it. The remaining 30% of my time is spent chasing up payments, backordering domains, etc.

I also have a team of staff in India that spend 20-30 hours per day doing a lot of grunt work for me like visiting websites and compiling the email addresses for me to save me time as I'd otherwise never get through it all.

I rarely use the phone. I would contact probably 10,000 companies a week and maybe call a company every 2 weeks or so. I'm not very good on the phone and have had great success by email so am happy to continue doing this.

Thanks for the response, contacting 10,000 companies a week is pretty damn impressive!

How much do you 'customize' each email? For example, would you send something detailed, or just a simple/generic notification?

I have a script which I use and customise a few things. It may only be a couple or quite a bit depending on the domain/prospect, etc. Eg. if the prospect I'm emailing owns pieshop.net and I'm selling pieshop.com the email would be a bit different then when I'm emailing the owner of fredspieshop.com

Welcome to the forum, David!

Sounds like you really know what you're doing & I hope we can all learn from you. Most of us on this forum are mainly involved with .au and because the aftermarket is still in its infancy we're all very much learning how best to sell... esp in volume.

Very impressive stuff - well done & I hope you can have as much success in .au as you've obviously had elsewhere (gTLDs I guess)

Cheers

Thanks David. I love what you've done with NetFleet, great aftermarket site. I have already made an offer on a domain but am shattered I missed out on seeing mowing.com.au as it went for a steal IMO and I definitely would've paid more.
