Facebook ads tactics

I'm looking to do some facebook ads now, i've done google adwords and adsence but i think facebook is different for me.

in one of my businesses i don't want to sell products but sell services so facebook seems to be able to target a USER, eg: plumber , they state they are a plumber and thus i can have my advert only show up when that plumber uses their facebook page.

and i think i can get it narrowed to plumber in australia in nsw in sydney ?

so that highly targeted ad seems very interesting to me.

has anyone had experience with doing this? maybe a link to an article on it?

my research also suggests that this highly targeted ads are DIRT CHEAP.

You can narrow target by several things. Not sure if one is occupation though.
See https://www.facebook.com/help/?page=203882222982239 for targetting options
I have used it to target by interests, pages liked, gender, age, location and specified time of day
It could be so narrow as to target just one person
Don't forget people often write bs in their profile
Just do it. It can be cheap as chips.

Yeah, not sure about services, but targeting through 'likes' works rather well for goods.

For a very generalised example, if I am selling pet accessories, targeting those who like pages such as 'cats' and 'cat owners' will generally give me a better target audience.

hi, yeh i see i can target colleges and universities, as my target market MUST have gone to uni that may work, interesting to see if it acknowledges aussie uni's ?

imagine the work load to say to someone who works for facebook to " go find every uni in the world, verify them and then set that as a parameter in the database" !!!..... "so John.. good luck and i'll see you in 4-5 years time... bye"

The DB is created by the crowd
So for example if no FB user admits to going to Uni of Tas in their profile, that Uni does not exist in the target db

Facebook usually runs these promos where they give out like free $50 and like training, If I see any come out in the future I will post them here.

But yeah big prices on Facebook are going up, I remember 1-2 years ago competition was way lower and prices were great now more people are flooding in. As alex said its better to target peoples interests so if some one "likes" property/houses/investments/ DIY stuff they are probably going to need building services for example. Targeting a huge broad sub section can yield irrelevant clicks.

thanks, i'm sure my target market would put this stuff in their profile

i was actually only joking though about "see you in 5 years" , i'll try not to be so dry humour from now on....

I'm looking to do some facebook ads now, i've done google adwords and adsence but i think facebook is different for me.

I recently read this article (it was either on TechCrunch or Mashable) which I cant find at the moment. I'll keep looking because it was a very good read. But it went along the lines of this. “Advertisers claim Facebook doesn’t understand them. Facebook claims Advertisers don’t understand them.”

The moral of the story was Facebook advertising is very different. “Its about generating a conversation over a long period/over multiple campaigns whilst utilizing the sites exciting features such as fan pages” to gain any significant result. Not immediate conversions/results.

From my limited experience I would have to agree with this. Because I really haven’t seen a big conversion rate.

Yes you can definitely drill down to your required audience. Click on the “Show Advanced Targeting Options” on the advertising panel.

(Once again I can’t find this.) I recently watched a video on how start ups can get their product featured on big websites/magazines like the Washington Post, Wired and etc.

One of the advice they gave was target the journalists at all these major magazines (Via Facebook – by drilling down on the advanced targeting feature.)

Have been experimenting with Facebook ads a little for a while now and no success. Seems to be very hard to really target a lot of areas because targeting is based on interests, geographical location, sex etc which won't really help for a lot of products and services.

eg according to Facebook there is an audience of 220 people for the term "cockroaches" in Australia yet lots of people do have cockroach problems. They aren't likely to add the term as an "interest" so there is nothing much to latch onto. Lots of small terms don't even show at all using "precise targeting" even though I would think there is a fair amount of discussion on facebook around those terms.

Still experimenting with Facebook so will see how it goes.

SO Snoopy what sort of % click throughs are you getting ? 0.001% ???? on impressions or are you getting the click throughs but not the conversions?

See i think if i'm selling a $100 common product like a ? dvd player ? then i'd really be looking at "are people clicking" but if i'm selling a unique targeted $3000 product then i'd be happy to get less impressions and not so many clicks.

impressions to click throughs to the end conversions when dealt as % seems to be the best starting point.

In the last couple of days since some major changes, 0.089%. No conversions. CPC's are very high thus far, 2-3 times the cost of Google adwords, so not holding my breath on it.
