Domains For Tender

So I was thinking the other day, what are the chances of NetFleet setting up a domains for tender division of their site?

I just think one thing that sucks about the AMA is that you need at least 3 or 4 bidders to get a respectable price for domain. A solution that might help solve this problem is setting up a tender process where bidders just submit their bids and the highest bidder wins the domain when the process expires.

Obviously I can't be certain but I think retail buyers would also be more interested in this sort of process because they would just need to submit one bid and not have to work about constantly watching an auction to make sure they aren't outbid.

Plus I think the fact that the process would be blind would get people putting erring on the side of caution and placing honest offers.

And best thing of all is that the domain sellers would also get to sell the domain for the highest bidders highest price.

And I think that's a really big incentive when you have a market that isn't very competitive, sellers would much prefer a tender process because even if only 1 or 2 bidders turn up you are likely to get a reasonable price rather than the $100 minimum.

Thoughts?

So no one else likes this idea?

NetFleet any comments?

I thought this idea would be a winner for all parties.

I think as a seller it has positives AND negatives. Either:

a) As a seller you get a nice price that people put forward to try and secure the domain.
b) You get a low price, but unlike an auction, buyers do NOT have the opportunity to counter-bid and increase your profit.

I think it would be need to be tested and compared with AMA.

Don't get me wrong I don't think Tendering is the perfect system.

I just think it is a good system where you are dealing with retail buyers who don't want to wait around for an auction and for domains where it's likely that you will have less than 4 or 5 bidders.

If I wanted to sell a premium domain where it's reasonable to expect it to auction for $5,000+ I don't think tending would be the way to go because any domains that is going to sell for $5,000 will have multiple buyers and will foster an environment of "competition".

Tending on the other hand is good when you are selling a domain where buyers are few and your only ally is the "fear" a potential buyer has that if he doesn't bid an honest price he might miss out.

Good ideas Chris. We did think about blind auctions a few months ago, but stuck with our current setup - of course, never say never! I think what our AMA's need currently, is much more exposure which we hopefully will achieve by rolling out search and browse functionality, in a single form, which covers all sales platforms. Amongst other initiatives.

My gut feeling is blind auctions would not necessarily increase prices due to the competition factor, and exposure that domains with visible bids on recieve. I don't technically know how difficult it would be to implement however, so I'll get that reviewed.

I just think it is a good system where you are dealing with retail buyers who don't want to wait around for an auction and for domains where it's likely that you will have less than 4 or 5 bidders.

Although not blind bidding, I would encourage referring retail clients to the fixed bid page, for example:

https://www.netfleet.com.au/NicotineGum.com.au

Or by setting a Buy It Now price, and pointing them to that.

Cheers

So what did the review reveal?
Any news?

I honestly think this idea would be the better way to sell about 90% of domains that get listed on the AMA because it doesn't require the buyer to watch an auction.

And as far as I can tell it's never been tried before so it would be an awesome experiment.

No update as yet. As soon as we do I will update all.

We have other development tasks that take precedent at the moment, namely providing front end registrar functions.

Agree it would be interesting experiment, but there are quite a few factors to consider.

Exciting. Does that mean NetFleet might also offer a registration and COR system in the not too distant future?

Having domains for tender came up in another thread, but I thought it's been over a year now since this issue was raise - has there been any development on this front?

Good luck getting any seller to agree to that.

Either sell a name at auction or set a price and wait. No "creative" solution has proven to work better those two despite 2500 years of thinking up creative ways to trying to get more than what something is worth.

HAHA!

Snoopy you always make me smile.

:D

That said, I'd definitely try to sell some of my domains via tender if a facility was available... I suspect it would would better than the results presently achieved by Snapper.

sounds like you have a gap in the market, program it yourself and charge domainers for the service.
