Affiliate Links

We just want to clarify DN Trade’s position with regards affiliate links in members posts.

In simple terms, we don’t allow it any more. It’s in the “Rules” – No. 15.

Please do not post affiliate links in any manner or form, as this could conflict with DNT. We keep this forum going by advertising revenue, and therefore competition is unhelpful.

DNT is a labour of love for us, but we would also like to make a few bucks ourselves for all the work we put in.

Hope everyone understands.

I dont know where that comment came from because too me, the Staff on DNtrade are very consistent. Being heavily involved in numerous forums and a Super Mod in a forum with MILLIONS of posts and 185K members, i can assure you that they are doing a damn good job.

DN Forum dont generally allow affiliate links and in fact, if you look through their rules, they clearly state:

Affiliate links of any type in posts not allowed in posts, signatures, or anywhere on the forum. However, there's an exception to the signature affiliate link rule for Exclusive Members. One of the benefits of becoming an Exclusive Member is that you would then be allowed to use affiliate links in your signature. The administrators of DNForum are the only ones permitted to post affiliate links in posts.

Furthermore, the weather in Melbourne doesnt change that much....its consistently miserable

Spacey, I don't mind justified criticism. Normally I prefer to do things in private though - hence my PM to you this afternoon after your "Melbourne Weather" comment.

And if you have a problem with me or other posts, I expect you to PM me or FPR. (As you did to FPR earlier this week complaining about another member's posts!).

I didn't appreciate your last post about us being like "Melbourne Weather" - always changing.

We are trying to provide a better all round experience for everyone - we are not draconian on moderating or anything else.

A lot of effort goes into this - unpaid.

As Soj said to you before (publicly) when you last complained - "if you don't like it, leave".

I say that to you privately again now (because I didn't want to publicly call you out).

I don't need crap posts like that.

Good to know I'm not the only one who has been on the receiving end of spacey's tantrums.

Personally, I think it's bad form when someone plasters their own affiliate link on another website unless the owner allows it or the poster is a sponsor. In other words, affiliate links belong on your own site. Spacey, the fact you do it and then crack the shits when you are politely asked to stop and then drag it out into public speaks volumes about you. If your aim was to make the mods look bad, I'd say it's backfired on you.

Personally I see it as slightly different.

If a site offers affiliate commission and their product is worthy of mention (in context to a thread) then why give them free traffic.

Conversely it is difficult to decide what is spam & what is in context (opinions will always vary).

It would be nice if an element of members judgement could prevail; given that the site is moderated.

Before Spacey's latest post, I was going to post a "clarification to my earlier clarification". But then things went off on a tangent ........

So here are some key points after this little kerfuffle:

• No one likes spam - but we do encourage members to post links to good relevant articles or resources that may be of interest to the
  DNT membership. After all, we are surely here to help each other out.
  
  
• We don't sit around waiting for each post to come in so we can moderate it - we mostly rely on members doing the right thing.
  
  
• We also encourage members to post links to the sites they are developing - and to ask for feedback if they want.
  
  
• As far as affiliate links are concerned, what we don't want to see please are aff/links to the "domaining industry" - be it hosting or software
  or any service or product that may well one day be an advertiser (or advertised) on DNT. This does not apply to sponsors and advertisers.

If you have seen some great deals on things like travel, accommodation, wine, fashion, flowers, hampers, books, computers, phones, electronics,
financial service products, other professional services ... etc, etc, etc - then you're welcome to post these in "General Chat" (in moderation of course ).

If you have an affiliate arrangement on the above, then our suggestion is that you post both an affiliate and non-affiliate link. Give people the choice
to support you. That seems to be the proper etiquette.
