Hi,

Just received an offer of $400 for the above domain I picked up off the drop a while back.......is that too cheap or should I take it and run? Really appreciate any help or guidance anyone can offer.

It's not worth anything like $6,800! Local (which is what matters for .au (Djuqa may disagree!)) exacts are 170/month. What did you pay for it and what would a $400 sale be in terms of annual ROI?

Looks like the winning bid on Drop was $1. Nice pick up.

$400 isn't a bad offer, but I reckon you can do better.

It's worth more than $400 imho Jason, but how much more is the $400 question. If you have someone "hot to trot", then some subtle
but sensible counter offering should see you get a good quick result. Particularly if you are not greedy. ;)

Definitely not worth $6800 (at least not to any rational domain buyer).

Which brings up a good point, who is the buyer? what do they do? and what do they want to do with the domain?

The above is always good to know, so you can work out how deep their pockets are and if they have room to negotiate or if they are running a thin margin business.

If $400 is their initial offer, I think that's a great first up offer, shows they are pretty serious. I'd counter with something in the high $XXX maybe even $X,XXX just to see if they are the sort of person is willing to negotiate.

What's the domain worth - from my perspective it's a low to mid $XXX - but that's from my perspective and obviously it's the buyer who is willing to part with their cash at the end of the day who determines value.

However given that it isn't what I'd call a "keyword rich" domain I think it'll be A LOT of effort to find another buyer who'd be willing to go $500+ on it. So that's probably worth considering also.

I had just assumed (wrongly as it seems) that he got an offer via NF. In this event he wouldn't know who he is dealing with.

So Jason - put your negotiating skill to the test. ;)

Veda Advantage have quite a few similar domains and it might be worth your while to drop them a line to see if there is any interest.

Good onya Shane...now I am having doubts....lol
If there is one thing I have learned the hard way it's that when it comes to doubts they won't serve you at the negotiating table and it's the person who is willing to walk away that wins at the negotiation.

So I think it's important to know in your own mind a definitive selling price, $400 might be it, but if you are desperate to sell the domain at $400 then to have any chance of getting more than $400 you have to at least be able to sell them the impression that you are willing to walk away and that they are missing an opportunity.

Chances are if they like the domain today, they are still going to like it in a couple of days time so there is nothing too detrimental with feeling them out with a higher counter offer and when they say no, say thanks but think your valuation is fair, and then just wait a day or two and then start talking with them again.

A wise fella, let's call him Neddy, once gave me some sage advice that once you give someone a counter offer you can't go up from there. So you may as well start higher and work down.

Ive had offers straight up of around $400 in the past, tried to go for more money and have been burnt.

to be honest take Bacon farmers advice send out a few emails make a few calls see if other businesses are keen on the name, if not I would take something similar to what is been offered in $xxx range.

I can not see this going for $x,xxx+ sorry to see, this is more a US and UK term.

i'm not finding that www.valuate.com is a reliable source of pricing a domain name. i have a domain name that makes me $30k p/a and valuate says its worth $10.00 !!! , i won't bore you with the rest of my examples.


eg: google or yahoo was probably originally bought for $20.00 but it is what they DID with it.

I'm sure there is more to it than just the domain though.

I had a domain that once made me $15k p/a which I sold for a nice amount, and if it dropped today i'd probably let it pass.

you're right... and thats why relying on valuate alone is not good ( i am NOT saying people do, but the conversation suggests that )

well i suppose what i am saying is i have hundreds of first page google rankings, it has been online and constantly updated/modified/vibrant for over 10 years and valuate does some silly algorithum and says it is worth $10.00

would you give someone $30k for $10.00 ? if so ..... call me !

and as i said thats just 1 of many i have tested.

hmmmm, i wonder if i sold this then it dropped would i pick it up? the answer would be no as they would have destroyed what i built and i am alot different now after that 10 years.
