Hi,

What's the story with .org.au ? The .org seems to be hugely popular in the US but we don't seem to register them here, is there a legality or something I don't know about surrounding .org.au domains? Any advice would be very greatly appreciated.

You could start by reading the Info at auDA.org.au
http://www.auda.org.au/policies/auda-2008-05/ said:
1. To be eligible in the org.au 2LD, registrants must be:
a) an association incorporated in any Australian State or Territory; or
b) a political party registered with the Australian Electoral Commission; or
c) a trade union or other organisation registered under the Workplace Relations Act 1996; or
d) a sporting or special interest club operating in Australia; or
e) a charity operating in Australia, as defined in the registrant’s constitution or other documents of incorporation; or
f) a non-profit organisation operating in Australia, as defined in the registrant’s constitution or other documents of incorporation.
After all auDA is the controlling entity.

Seriously why ask here, most Aussie domainers know little about the rules of .com.au let alone .org.au

Plus .org is popular world wide, including Australia. (the restrictions on registering .org were removed years ago).

On the auda site i did read for 'non commercial' yet i am aware of at least one that offers advertising ??

Non profit ......doubt it

Many have been taken away from people in the past for breaching the rules

Do you "profit" from your advertising options on your sites? Or does that get offset by other expenses?

I wouldn't assume that advertising on a site is pure profit.

Just as an FYI you can take it or leave it.

As a registrar we take more auDA complaints regarding org.au domains vs policy than any other type of domain.

Additionally auDA have previously done full/random audits of org.au domains on their own. As opposed to com.au complaints which unless it's a high profile domain are always complaint based.

I think holding org.au to flip or monetize you're setting yourself up for auDA to step in and take the domain at some point.

Thanks Brett, I gathered must be some form of issue. Thanks for the tip, think I will certainly be leaving them alone.

I realise you are a Newbie, but surely even Newbies realise that often the best place to find info is at the source i.e. auDA.

As one of the few FULLTIME domainers at dnTRADE, my time is my own to waste. But I do realise sometimes newbies do not have all the answers so that is why fora like dnTrade and Namepros exist

Untie those Knickers FULLTIME domainer, no all newbies don't realise they can find answers to their questions at auDA. Geez for some reason I thought this forum was so we could ask questions and help each other, not to be made to feel stupid.

I'm sure Djuqa was just feeling grumpy this morning.

Questions are good. And you seem to be a fast learner. :)

I would always ask a friend and hopefully recieve personal knowledge and advice, rather than just read the policies of a govt company and possibly misinterpret them.

And in here.....well arent we all friends? :)
