Website Review

Hi everyone,

I'd like to offer up my business site for evaluation if I may...

My intention was a simple, user-friendly site, that clearly stated what I do, how much, and where the user should go from here. Have I achieved this? Please let me know. Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Looks great. Oh and welcome to DNTrade :)

1. I'm not a fan of the Facebook like logo at the bottom right. Maybe make your own...?

2. Where's the portfolio? The only thing I can tell from your site of what you've designed, is your three pre-built sites as well as the site itself.

3. No mention of a CMS. How will the customer edit the content?

Thanks for the feedback.

The reason I don't have a portfolio on there is because I haven't got one. This was the first website I created, and a couple of others I'm currently working on. Hence why I put the pre-built stuff on there as kind of a showcase.

I didn't mention CMS because I have not dabbled with that yet, other then my own wordpress blog. But for now I wasn't intending on building on CMS.

Regards,

Ben

No problem. The site itself does look great so I think that'll draw people in :)

Nice one Ben, your site is nice
I did a like on your FB page
I would suggest you promote who you are and where you are in the banner
Good to see the phone number there
You need to tell people you are in Brisbane, if that is where you are
Regards
Joe

site looks pretty decent but a few quick issues for you:

* main title tag is too long cuts off name looks bad in SE
* 5 H1 tags
* low amount of text on the index, could use some more text for SEO.
* no xml sitemap
* No robots.txt
* No feeds

Maybe make a blog on the site put up content.

Regards.

Hey James,

Thanks for the reply.

I don't have much text on the site because that's the style I want. I personally don't find sites with a LOT of text very appealing, so I'm minimising that as much as possible. I submitted an xml sitemap to google, it is in the directory. But I don't link to it on the site.
Also, there is a link to my blog down the bottom of the site.

What's the downfall of using multiple h1 tags?

Ben

Hey, Webfunk. That's a pretty nice and simple design and I like it such that the text on the site is large and easy to read. I would suggest that on your Web Design Process page, after you get the visitor all ready to make an enquiry or even get started, perhaps instead of clicking on the Back link, you can add a button for "Contact Me Now" which would lead to your contact page for them to enquire further for your services.

Also, I understand that it's hard to put a price on design but since you are catering to the small businesses, perhaps it would be best to put some kind of start range. You know how the adverts usually go with "Starting from $XXX". That would give the visitors a better idea if you're a good fit for what they're looking for.

Just my two cents worth!

Hey mate, thanks for the reply. Glad you like the site! Good idea with the "contact me now" part, I shall make that change. As for the pricing, I may put up a starter package or something of the sort to give them an idea of what they will be looking at.

Thanks again!

Ben

I suggest making all 3 images link to your services page and not just your click here image. It took me 2 clicks to figure out I had to mouse over to the right and click the last image of the paper/thumbtack. I would also be moving the twitter/facebook logo/links up the top right below your contact details. Ignore sp@rky13, social media stuff can be powerful and it gives you immediate social proof even if it's just a little.

Hi it's not a bad looking site though I'm curios as to who your target market is.

From my point of view the site seems to be targetting younger teens who would be looking for a hobby style website.

Also I'm just wondering how to you get your customers ?

I'm not sure if this is your intention.. if I were you I would stick with something like wordpress, target small businesses & charge atleast $800.

Kind regards from a fellow web developer.

My target market is anyone starting up a small business. What indicates that I am targeting younger teens? I'm currently in the process of making an elegent/professional site for a wedding planner which I will soon be adding to the portfolio.

I get my customers through referrals...forums, word of mouth. Sometimes I even go out and introduce myself to businesses, and letterbox-drop flyers.

I am in the process on learning wordpress so it will be something that I offer. $800 minimum seems a little high to me....I would have thought $500 minimum would be appropriate, obviously depending on the complexity of the site... But based on my $39/hour that would give them about 13 hours of my time which should be enough to create a basic 4-page site I think?

Tell me your thoughts :)

Hi Webfunk,

The domain name, colours used, image hover effects & writing seems to be following a funky theme which I'm not sure is preferred by small businesses although this is only one opinion.

That's smart to advertise yourself offline since the cost for advertising, on let's say google adwords, could be quite high. I do think however you need to have your site optimized - using wordpress it can quite easy.

For starters get this plugin: All in one SEO

In regards to pricing,

Honestly the demand is really high & as long as you target the right people & as long as you offer the right features (benefits) then businesses will be very willing to pay the $800 if not more.

13hours - Wordpress will cut that time in half at minimum. Just buy a suitable theme relevant to your client' needs, edit the theme according to client requests, add content & images the client provides, optimize on-site seo (maybe as a bonus) & voila.

Just make sure the author of the wordpress theme doesn't restrict use to personal.

Thanks for your opinion. Like I said, I am looking into WordPress and it will be something that I offer to those you want it. I would most likely charge more for the CMS option because not only is it taking away paid maintenance work for me in the future, but I believe the customer should be paying a higher premium for the functionality of self-updating. So in that case, yes I think $800+ would be fair :)
