I have TFN so that'll help by the sounds of it. I sent an email to auda regarding the issue of the name not relating:

I am interested in registering a .com.au domain as a sole trader. The domain will relate to web hosting reviews but as it is a review it is not necessarily a direct business though it will be aiming to make a profit, so does this count as a business and therefore be allowable under auda policy?

Here's the reply:

When you register a .com.au domain name you have to provide some “business” information such as an ABN, ACN or an Australian trademark number and warrant that you are eligible for the domain name in some way.
How you go about doing business is not our concern.

Sounds to me like he was avoiding the question in regards to the eligibility of the domain but sounds promising to me

I reg my ABN when I had just turned 16 and had .au domains soon after.

Sparky, many people on this forum are sole traders. If a website is making a decent income there is no reason why you cannot turn it into a business and even register the domain name as a business name.

If you have a TFN, then apply online for an ABN.

They won't get into a case by case basis unless they have to, and rightly so. Bottom line IMO, do what you think is right and deal with problems as they arise (within reason).

Yah, I've looked through the policy a few times and seen 2b but never thought about it being that open to interpretation
