probably one of the most valuable domains online. Could fetch $100,000 + from a serious buyer such as a national jeweller chain, big global brand such as Rolex, Citizen, Tag Heur, Panerai, Breitling,, etc who all spend millions a year on media advertising in Australia alone

1. easy to sell and ship watches via a website

2. hundreds of watch brands and some who pay big money for advertising

3. Go to any westfield shopping centre and see how many shops are selling watches..its obvious heaps of people love watches and most people have more than one.

This site could be the clear market leader if it was developed into an online shop. I reckon easily it could do $1 million a year turnover at least if it got the right stock, fast shipping and good pricing.... Maybe even a forum for watch fanatics?

I think the profit margins on watches are very high and its an item that will always be popular be it for fashion, prestige, investment or just to tell the time..Most people wear a watch and many people wear different watches for different occasions.

Depends what watches you are dealing with, I think due to the high amount of competition from the US market now with exchange rates soo good people are a bit more cost savvy.

But yes I do agree this is a great domain, good potential to make it into something great but I do not think it is the best domain.

I think that you pretty much nailed it! The only drawback to a name like that is that more and more people (younger especially!) don't wear or buy watches anymore.

But yeah, in the right hands it could definitely go ballistic.

I don't think so, I am 23 and I have 3 swiss watches.

I have friends all similar ages 23/24 and all are into watches...

Sure people use mobile phones to check the time these days but watches are very popular, they are a must have mens piece of jewelery.

I think it is something that has probably declined in popularity. Still a huge market obviously but no longer something that is "needed" by most people. Personally the only watch I own is one that was given to me and only wear it once a year at most. Years ago before mobile phones were ubiquitous I used to wear one every day.

That's surprising to hear actually. Maybe the 'kids' that I see are farther down the socio-economic ladder. I LOVE my watches - but I'm kinda old school that way....

It seems that watch brands cannot live without an ambassador these days. Renowned watch brands have famous personalities to promote them: George Clooney for Omega, Leonardo DiCaprio for TAG Heuer, Rubens Barrichello for Audemars Piguet and Roger Federer for Rolex, are a few from a long list of celebrities that are being sponsored by watch companies.

Smaller watch companies seem to have less known ambassadors. What to think of the cooperation between watch brand Bremont and Bear Grylls, who is perhaps not so known to the public, but nevertheless a great adventurer and a best selling author? Perhaps one exception to the rule of small brands sponsoring less known ambassadors is Kobold and their collaboration with James Gandolfini (‘Tony Soprano’ in TV hit series The Sopranos).

The question we asked ourselves is, does it work? According to the authorized resellers of various brands we asked, it seems that it does. People come into the store of the authorized Omega dealer and ask for the ‘James Bond’ Seamaster, or ask the IWC representative about the IWC that Zinedine Zidane wears.

MotoringExposure thinks there are two groups of people interested in watch ambassadors and similarly, there is an important distinction between the types of ambassadors: some are officially crowned ambassador and then there are those who are famous and just wear a particular style of a certain brand.

Rookie collectors or people who see themselves as ‘just’ a consumer of a nice time piece, are more vulnerable to the official brand ambassadors such as George Clooney, James Bond, Brad Pitt (TAG Heuer) or Kate Winslet (Longines). They noticed a watch advertisement in a magazine they’ve read and ask about it at a jeweler.

The second group of people interested in watch ambassadors are those who collect watches or see themselves as watch connoisseurs. This group is – most of the time – not very interested in official ambassadors, but in famous people who bought their watch at their own expense and are seen with it in public.

Jennifer Aniston wearing a custom DLC’ed Rolex watch, Bruce Springsteen wearing a Glashütte Original Navigator Panoramadatum, John Mayer and his Patek Philippe ref.2499 (but we see him wearing Rolex most of the time) are a few recently spotted celebs sporting their watch of choice. Entire websites, weblogs and forum threads are dedicated to the hobby of spotting watches on the wrists of famous (and not so famous) people.

The fact the entire cult around the Rolex Daytona started out with Paul Newman wearing one in a movie; or the marketing of the Omega Speedmaster Pro is still based on ‘our’ visit to the moon; or that watch collectors go nuts over the Richard Mille on Rafael Nadal’s wrist during a tennis match; or that people ask about James Bond’s watches – be it the Rolex Submariner he wore in Dr.No or the Omega Seamaster in the last few EON productions – tells us that ambassadors work. Official or unofficial.

What do you base this on or is it anecdotal guesswork like the rest of us rather than something definite? ie any statistics showing this?

Regarding the rest of the post from what I can recall watch companies have always used celebrities, like the James Bond examples which look to have started in 1962.

Speaking of James Bond.. after I saw Quantum of Solace, I spotted the James Bond watch (an Omega) in a jewelers for $180. Went in, tried it on and told the lady I'd take it. When she told me "that'll be $1800".

I almost died. I had my (at the time) new girlfriend with me and I didn't want to lose face either but fortunately I didn't like the colour anymore and opted not to buy it lol.

I'd never of had that problem with watches.com.au!
