You snooze, you lose

So interesting story today.

Picked up a dropped domain a few weeks back. Today, on Netfleet had a casual browse of domains and couldn't believe it but saw the dropped domain I had picked up listed in the Aftermarket sales area. Thought why not, I'll send an offer out of curiosity, thinking the seller would be inactive since he left the domain drop.

A few hours later he calls me saying he agrees to the offer . Yep, he wants to sell the domain that I already own. Told him I'll call back and let him know I'm retracting my offer because his domain didn't checkout. Haven't had the heart to tell him I own it lol. I'm sure he'll find out sooner or later. Will be an interesting discussion when he does.

I recently got an email from a company trying to sell me a domain, funnily enough, I checked out the domain and saw that it was dropping. So I picked up the name at snapnames and then emailed the company a few days later saying that I was interested in purchasing the domain from them. No response. It seemed that this companies strategy was to try and sell domains that were dropping to other people before they had picked them up.

not smart if they loose the auction, then they do not have the product lol...
Unless they word the proposal well and operate like a buying agent.

Plus I think there is little downside risk (other than tying capital up) when it comes to bidding for competitive domains, because to win a domain on the expiry auctions there has to be someone who was willing to pay as much as you did. So there is obviously interest in the domain at that price.

Plus depending on your business model, if you have the capacity to profitably develop domains where potential buyers back out deals then the risk even further reduced.

The biggest issue I see with the idea is the 6 month holding period for newly registered domains.
