I just saw a recently published article on top ccTLD Registries.

It listed the Top 10 - Australia isn't there yet, but it is closing fast!

Top ccTLD Registries (April 23rd, 2011)

1 .de (Germany) 14,367,909
2 .uk (United Kingdom) 9,317,393
3 .nl (Netherlands) 4,412,505
4 .eu (European Union) 3,392,796
5 .cn (China) 3,379,441 (February 28th, 2011)
6 .ru (Russian Federation) 3,274,063
7 .ar (Argentina) Source: Zooknic, January 2011
8 .br (Brazil) Source: Zooknic, January 2011
9 .it (Italy) 2,163,460
10 .pl (Poland) 2,084,330

But what made me go "Wow!" was looking at the Netherlands - and then trying to compare it to Australia.

  • The Netherlands has a population of 17 million - Australia has approx 22.5 million
  • Total domain registrations for .nl = 4,400,000 - Total domain registrations for .au = 2,053,000
  • The first .nl registration was done in 1986 - 25 years ago
  • The Netherlands equivalent of auDA came into being in 1996. auDA was 1999
  • More than 1900 registrars offering the .nl domain extension.

This next bit is what I like! ;)
  • Unlike .au domain registration where registrants must be an Australian resident or a foreign company with a license
to trade in Australia, non-Netherlands residents can register a .nl name – something that has been allowed since 2009.

  • There is no 6 month prohibition on selling newly registered domain names.
