Wordpress question

I've made the mistake of updating a theme on one of my websites and have now lost a calculator I had. I have backup, but never done this before. Do I remove the existing files first on cpanel and then upload the backup?
Any suggestions from a wordpress expert would be welcome.

if i stuff up...... which i often do.......... i RENAME the folder so i don't overwrite it, then upload my backup.
sometimes you find that your backup is not going to solve the issue so then you have your original files intact.
also check you have enough disk space allocated to the domain before uploading any more folders, you can get errors that confuse you when it is simply a lack of space.
even when a site is broken, backup the broken site before making any changes.
i use a "backwards date system" thus today is 150312 , it helps order your files in your system. eg: website150127
