i have all versions here, xp,vista, win7, win8 and now win10 is coming out
i just read you can download it for free and if you have versions of win7 / 8 you can convert/upgrade for free.
i've also heard that although you will get a free upgrade, it may be a 1 year deal and after that it becomes a subscription model.

as i'm looking into purchasing another computer this year i've been holding off till it automatically comes with win10, i was wondering if anyone else had some more information.

from microsoft website, hmmm why free ? is it only me that doesn't trust them ?
my little birdy on my shoulder says " lets get them all to get rid of their win7 and win8 which they may use for 5 years, so next year we can start charging them forever because people are not upgrading fast enough"
i'd say most people buy a computer and SKIP a version, eg: go from xp to win8, thus skipping millenium/vist/vista/win7
with subscription its monthly/yearly or else.
thats like having to pay a charge each month to use your toaster / microwave / fridge !

    i smell a rat.

ash: YEP, microsoft has always made us guinea pigs, i've always waited for "service pack 2 " before upgrading.
i wait till the last possible moment to upgrade IE, even though i use firefox and chrome mostly.

i don't like the auto update thingy !

maybe i'll buy a new computer and put XP on it, as really who cares about adobe flash anymore? then use firefox but still have the new speed !
i was thinking today i maybe should change religions and turn to ubuntu, linux and google docs ? i don't think i can ever go apple ( sorry ), but having said that i think apple might be LAUGHING right now at MS's decisions.
is this the "fall of TROY" ? , the trogan horse ? now gates has gone ?
to much cloak and dagger to buy their shares IMO right now.

Don't worry about upgrading IE - they're replacing it with Edge

johno69 - I'm still using a desktop that was built in 2009 but I'd love to upgrade to the latest. (I've been thinking about replacing it with a surface pro 3 - my logic is the SP3 must be at least as powerful as an old PC!)

thanks for that, you can see i don't get out much LOL
well thats a great idea, MS had to do something, as everyone is turning away from IE.

first thing i say to my dev clients is ask them what system they are using, mac / pc/ browser etc so i understand what they are seeing, i posted on another thread one client said to me " the website looks sh1t on the office computer" i asked whats the system and he said "xp with ie8" so i said, " buy a new computer , i'm not changing he website code " or " use firefox" , but still buy a new computer !
OK, so exciting times ahead for MS ? they have finally felt the HEAT and realised that the old days of muscling people like netscape just doesn't work anymore.

That is the most appropriate place for it too, right next to the $1.99 expiring soon sponge cakes.
