Hi Guys,

I have a number of domain names and I'm wondering which ones i should develop next (while the rest remain parked on Sedo). Your suggestions would be very welcome. Maybe select top 2 domains and how can I monitise them (eg lead generation, affiliate, etc). Normally i'd be stuck but because of this great community, i'm anticipating some great ideas. Thanks in advance :)

Hi Ross,

Give me a few days to a week. I'm running some tests on the domains for you...

Cheers

Hmmm, without doing any research whatsoever I'd suggest blogmarketing.com.au.

Why? It's very easy for users to start their own blog and there's heaps of affiliate tools and products to onsell. In some cases, you may also be able to pick up 2nd tier sales where you get a % of sales generated by bloggers you originally signed up.

I also like Findhotel.com.au - probably because I focus on this area. Be aware that competition in this space is fierce with some well established larger players.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

Not too sure what to do with blogmarketing.com.au to be honest... i was actually surprised that it was mentioned.

As for findhotel.com.au, i'm not really sure how to get traffic from Google. When i type "find hotel" on Google, there are a lot of pretty high PR sites there so i'm even sure how i can compete. Or where will i actually get the content for the site itself, i don't know anything about hotels except for staying at a few over the years... :)

So fair i've had good experience doing lead generation websites (such as refinance-mortgage.com.au) and affiliate sites (such as cheap-car-insurance.com.au).

However, i'm open to suggestions... which is why i've posted this question in the first place. So thanks for the ideas and keep them coming.

i think buyingabusiness is a good one , i think most google ads for business pay good ?

My best click has been over $9 for a ad for businessadvice.com.au

Livegirls is a good name for a webcam site

Hi Ross,

Here is the search volume breakdown of the phrase equivalents of your listed domains for the last week or so.

Row "Search Terms in ross - 4 weeks ending January 24, 2009
(Filtered by: Adult filter On)" Searches
1 necessary 16.71%
2 mother 16.63%
3 choose 12.23%
4 optimistic 6.39%
5 chick 6.16%
6 legitimate 4.79%
7 satisfied 4.52%
8 describe 4.10%
9 father 3.66%
10 drink 3.42%
11 natural cosmetics 3.40%
12 introduced 3.21%
13 free food 2.58%
14 darwin festival 2.35%
15 secrecy 1.19%
16 find hotel 1.15%
17 poor credit 0.96%
18 rich boy 0.88%
19 live girls <0.8777%
20 courageous <0.8777%
21 rich girl <0.8777%
22 executive salary <0.8777%
23 invest money <0.8777%
24 salsa club <0.8777%
25 credit debt <0.8777%
26 fly cheap <0.8777%
27 refinance mortgage <0.8777%
28 richboy <0.8777%
29 dance festival <0.8777%
30 executive recruiter <0.8777%
31 own business <0.8777%
32 passwordrecovery <0.8777%
33 mental therapy <0.8777%
34 notforsale <0.8777%

Based on that I would choose naturalcosmetics.com.au. It has a great search volume & a really clear development path with likely advertisers. Darwinfestival.com.au could be good too but might suffer from seasonal ups & downs (mind you the festival is not til Aug so maybe it might be worth having a go with this one too before then). Findhotel.com.au is a quality domain with good search but an extremely competitive market.

So that's my pick - just concentrate on targetting the search term 'natural cosmetics', add a few pages of content, spend a few hours on link building and you stand a great chance of hitting number 1 in Google Australia!

Thanks David... looks great.

Hi David,

Thanks for getting back to me regarding the suggestion.
Out of interest, what tool did you use to do the research?

I typically use google suggestion tool... which is actually how i registered most of my domain names. It was a usefull trick last year... just looked at what people were searching and then registered the domain.

Anyway, i think that naturalcosmetics is a great suggestion because it creates a brandable concept. There also doesn't seem to be much competition there as well.

What i'll probably do is outsource someone to write me about 5-10 500word articles on the site, and then load it into Joomla.

Btw... who do you outsource your content development to?
I've used getafreelancer.com but had issues with the quality.

Also are you based in Melb or Sydney

Hi Ross,

Used Hitwise fror that. I find it's very good for Aussie data (they use ISP's to anonymously monitor 3 mil users...)

For content I use a lady in QLD. She's not cheap but for your best sites it's worth paying the extra for quality. Plus being Aus we don't have the color/colour, ute/pick-up type problems I've had elsewhere.

I'll PM you the details.

We're based in Sydney (thankfully at the moment - prefer 28 degrees to 43!!). You're based down there from memory aren't you?

Cheers

David

PS just uploaded content for www.hockey.com.au this am (written by this lady). So that one's ready to go too!

Hi David,

Thanks for that... at the moment i don't want to shell out a lot of cash on the internet business yet. I've recently spent $US250 on a sales letter for refinance-mortgage.com.au ... which actually has a video of me at the start.
Unfortunately i've picked the most competitive term to go for "refinance mortgage". So at the moment i'm ranked like #70 on Google.

If i would have created this post earlier then i would have just developed natural cosmetics instead. All this stuff that they're saying "create a youtube video and then you'll get lots of hits on your site" is not that true. It's a shame too, cos i liked the way the site was put together... although people will need to scroll 8 pages of Google results to get to it.

Regarding the heat, yeh it was really bad. I'm working from home at the moment and it sucks especially on a hot day like last week. Hopefully this week will be better.

Yeh, i'm based in St Kilda... but i maybe visiting Sydney as part of the Melbourne business school trip. Would be great to catch up with likeminded people ... (outside a conference for which you have to pay $1000 to attend.)

Ross, with your refinance mortgage site, how does your monetisation work? Does the free consultation just goto a mortgage broker, and then youll get a commission from any loans sold through them? Looks like youve got a pretty solid sales letter there, has it converted thus far or are you still struggling for traffic based on your google ranking?

And yeh the heat was herendous down here last week, though the water was nice down at brighton beach ;)

What i'm trying to do is move away from the "standard mortgage broker" scenario and move towards offering lots of value.

It's not on the site yet, but visitors will get a personalised report for their property and heaps of other stuff just for leaving their details. So lots and lots of value that no one else provides.

But yeh, the money will come from the broker giving me a fee either per referral or per sale. I haven't had the opportunity to test the conversion as i almost get no traffic on the site at this stage (site has been up for around 1-2 weeks).

I can try adwords but "refinance mortgage" is very expensive (around $25-40) per click. So i'm a bit stuck at the moment and quite happy to listen to advice.

Regarding the letter, it took me a while to manage its delivery... it's pretty sophisticated i think. It's uses "long copy" which other internet marketers use to sell ebooks... but in this case the visitor doesn't have to buy anything... just leave their details to get a lot of value.

Thanks for that James... good pickup.

Apart from that ... IS there any reasons why you (or anyone else on this board) would feel reluctant to take the plunge and get a free consultation?

Eg, something doesn't sound right, looks dodgy, etc

What i'm trying to do is make it a "no brainer" for the site visitor ... and in the process i want to identify any objections and remove them.

For example, as part of my guarantee, i previously offered to donate $25 to a charity if they thought they didn't get much value from the consultation. After reading that, my friends started making jokes of donations going to "Ross Turetsky Beer Fund" ... so i've now changed the guarantee to offer the $25 directly to the individual.
