I had a look at the current status of the domains in the Netfleet "Top Domain Sales" section, and how these companies have used the domains.
I only looked at those that sold for $20k+

    investmentproperty.com.au - $137,501
Site is live, does not rank page 1 for the exact term.

    toys.com.au - $90,585
    Does not resolve.

    koala.com.au - $50,000
Ranks #1 for its term. Great use of a brandable domain.

    bitcoin.com.au - $39,930
Site is live and ranks #1 in Google AU for the term.

    homeloancalculator.com.au - $36,301
    Default hosting page. Not used.

    electricity.com.au - $34,026
    Does not resolve

    training.com.au - $33,121
Site is live and ranks bottom #1 in Google AU for the term.

    carinsurance.net.au - $33,001
    Fabulous for sale page

    mysuper.com.au - $30,801
    Does not resolve

    cloud.com.au - $27,500
Parked by Digital Pacific with an email "Let me know" form.

    currencyconverter.com.au - $27,500
    Fabulous for sale page

    creditreport.com.au - $27,500
    Suspended hosting.

    sextoys.com.au - $25,500
Live site, doesn't rank page 1 for the term.

    creditcards.net.au - $24,202
    For sale landing page

    centralcoast.com.au - $22,000
    Redirects to wings.com.au

    websitedesign.com.au - $22,000
Live site, ranks #4 for exact term. Very competitive term.

    credit.com.au - $20,009
    Fabulous landing page

    vitamins.com.au - $20,000
    For sale landing page

    fridges.com.au - $20,000
    Does not resolve

    1300numbers.com.au - $20,000
live site, does not rank page 1 for exact term.

For me, that's a lot of money spent without much clear benefit. I do know some are owned by members here, and some may have been purchased for indirect resale.

Still, doesn't make for a great selling point that these domains are the top sellers, they certainly are not the top performers by any means.

Think this is pretty typical, there is always a mix of domainers, people who buy something and never get around to doing much, people whose plans change, defensive purchases etc. The SEO benefits are also much reduced from in the past.

good thread, worthy of becoming a yearly event i say.

before i get "called out" :)
weddinginvitations, at the moment blank, was purchased on the basis of a certain large australian invitation producing company providing a special drop ship type service to us, this feel down as they went to change the agreed terms and we made the decision to walk away, for various "post walk" reasons it was definately the right decision.

its since been on the drawing board and new technologies have come forward, all be it from overseas as no australian company can match the quality.
there is a plan, its a mix of OS and local, it is being implemented and it will happen in 2017.
for those interested the number$ still add up and profit on investment of a premium domain is quite quick....... within 4-6 months of opening is my prediction. ongoing revenue and profitability is close to 70% so once the intial purchase hurdle and setup is over its a very good ROI.
"fair call" , i am doing the work, if i had to pay someone then it would be another rather expensive exercise ontop of the purchase price which i think many do not count in as they purchase.

i'd like to see this report again with a thresehold of $10K

thanks johno69 for taking the time

With many great names just because they have not been fully developed yet or are not at their full potential does not mean their values have gone down or they where a bad investment. They may be resold and end up who knows where. The fact is many drop/ netfleet and reported sales are just to domainers or some people who found out about the opportunity to buy the name this does not reflect the "retail" value in many cases.

Flatmates.com.au sold for $20 million last year. What was it worth undeveloped? What was it worth in early state development and what will it be worth in a few years time?It may go up it may go down.

This is a great example how a name can go on to bigger and better things with different owners https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business.com
    Hand Registration (?) > Sale $150,000 > Sale $7.5 million>Sale $345 million

You do not have to be the top of a google search o the current "top performers" to be worth money or to make money.

I expect we will possibly see big things from the recently bought Insurance.com.au as another example. Where does it rank now? What money does it make now? What's it worth now... then once developed what will it be worth... probably $ millions or more.

its no different to over capitalising a house, you just have to weight it up
