There are obviously many au sales that go unreported each year or that are confidential, but we've done a little digging into the top reported domain sales from 2015. These are all four figure sales and above.

We also have a quick comparison of the 2014 and 2015 sales.

A few quick stats:
  • There were 175 reported .au domain sales of four figures and above (211 in 2014)
  • $663,139 total reported investment in domains ($711,274 in 2014)
  • Average sale price $3,789 ($3,335 in 2014)
  • 12% of those sales were more than $5,000 (14% in 2014)
  • 27% of those sales were $2,001 and $5,000 (29% in 2014)
  • 61% of those sales were $1,000 and $2000 (57% in 2014)
  • 95% of the sales were .com.au (97% in 2014)
  • 5% of the sales were .net.au (3% in 2014)

Sounds like little change over the year. The total does sound low though, not that I am really surprised. That isn't much of a pot to go around even if the unreported's are a fair bit bigger.

The .net.au's surprised me, I would have thought that would have been down.

The number are too small statistically, i.e. 8 sales or whatever.

If you look at namebio though the numbers are way way down for .net.au,

2015 - 3 sales
2014 - 2 sales
2013 - 6 sales
2012 - 100+ sales

Pre 2012 data is hard to get to with namebio at the moment though I've looked at it before and there was a couple more years with 50-100+ sales from what I remember.

The Google EMD changes (which rolled out Sept 2012) decimated the .net.au market.

The unreported sales are a LOT bigger. There are plenty of sales in the market, they just don't get published

What does get reported is the barometer, and those kind of numbers don't make for a strong market.

Dnjournal reports about $100 million in sales a year total, so .com.au look to have around 0.7% of total sales (probably less because dnjournal doesn't list sales below $2000 in most categories). That is a massive under performance for an economy that is 1.5% of the world's total.
