Plural vs Singular

OK so domain valuations are a subjective thing at the best of times, but I'd like to raise the topic of an issue that I've always been in two minds about...

Plural vs Singular

So today the domain mattresstoppers.com.au sold on Snapper for $151 which I was quite interested in given that I bought mattresstopper.com.au a couple of years ago.

Note - I didn't win the auction for mattresstoppers.com.au today.

So mattresstoppers.com.au seems a more brandable domain, but mattresstopper.com.au has FAR more search volume...

mattresstoppers.com.au - [480] & "1600"
mattresstopper.com.au - [1000] & "8100"

So which is the more valuable domain? and by how much? And are there instances where one is better than the other?

And has anyone had success with selling plural and singular domains as a pair in the past?

Totally depends on the domain in question. This one i'd say the plural would suit the development path better.

But really depends on a per domain basis.

Think the plural is the better name. I really can't imagine building a site on the singular, doesn't sound right and is more of a search term than a site name.
