Online shoppers and GST for imported goods

Given the Gillard Government history on implementing new taxes and the fact the decline in the mining boom will see decreased tax revenue for the government I think the introduction of the GST on imports might happen before the next election. Will be interesting to see how they collect it.

"ONLINE shopping could be set to get more expensive after a review recommended new tax levels for cheap imported parcels."

Thought this might be of interest, what does everyone think?

Cheers,
Chris

Bad for consumers
Good for the government
Good for locally based online stores
Won't do a thing to slow the decline of the bricks and mortar stores effected by the Internet
Bad for Gerry Harvey, They'll call it "Gerry's Tax"

Another impost on businesses (as tax collectors) but we will still end up with $xxx m in government jobs & agencies (with the obligatory 6 layers of management) to collect $xxx m

SO are you all saying, net revenue zero, net retail gowth gain zero, and we are still restricted to a 1.5ltr bottle of whiskey on arrival back from a holiday OS.

seems silly we still have duty free limits these days? the governments ( meaning present and past) have been slow to act if they should act at all?
