no redemption period on unrenewed domain

i am dropping a domain but was watching it, it expired and today is its 30 days after expiry which if i wanted it i could renew, then tomorrow i suspected it would go into redemption for 30 days ?
no, its on tomorrows drop list !!!!!
has something "officially" changed?
