newbie questions

Hi guys

These questions are probably pretty basic but as a newbie I need to get a handle on the basics first.

This is how i see a domainer.

Buying domain names, establishing sites and value adding until someone sees value in your domain and pays you a decent price.

And/or buying domain names, establishing sites, building them up to a high traffic site and earning money from advertising revenue like 'google adds'.

Please correct me if im wrong and add anything ive missed.

Good questions.

Firstly, not everyone is a "domainer". Many people have lots of domains but don't necessarily describe themselves as "domainers".

Lots of people have day jobs, but accumulate domains as a part time activity and investment strategy. Web designers, SEO people, lawyers, accountants, financial planners, etc, etc

So I'll speak for me. I call myself a domainer. It's what I do full time, and I always try operate as per the rules and regulations that auDA lays down.

First and most important of these is that no one is allowed to purchase a domain with the sole purpose of reselling it. This rule is to try and stop the "holding people to ransom" issue you were talking about last night. That's why auDA has a 6 month prohibition on resales.

My Definition

An individual or company that actively engages in the buying of domain names for purposes of monetisation (creating ongoing revenue via various means including AdSense and affiliate marketing etc). This is achieved via domain parking and/or website development with appropriate relevant content and/or links.

Just like a "bricks and mortar" property developer, sites can be sold, traded or leased in the future, or they can be held for investment purposes.

The beauty of domain investing is that the ROI is potentially so much better than bricks and mortar investments.
