NEVER registered domains

it seems ( to me) that most of DNT concerntrates on dropping domains, a mentality that suggests every good domain has already been taken, i'm SURE i am wrong about that but 99% of conversations seem to be along those lines.

I just thought i'd start a conversation about the search for those never registered gold domains.

I've just come back from my 5 yr olds youth choir which they had an AGM as well, my role was to be out watching the kids play whilst helena was at the meeting. SO, i have laptop, kids playing and i didn't forget to bring some beer ! , the committee have a break and helena comes to inform me she has volunteered "us" to rebuild their website..... more like ME !

anyway, back to the point, they have a crap website and an obvious domain name eg: sometownyouthchoir.com.au

but on investgation www.youthchoir.com.au was not registered ! so i have registered that for them now but the point is thats a bloody good domain name thats been sitting there.

now this is just one of those things you do as a dad but it does lead to the point of there's still A LOT of good domains out there, mostly 2 words or "longtail" but still many up for offer.

Very true Tim, you just need to do the research or keep your pulse on the domain industry or look on TV/News and local events. You can pick up some good domains which may have been dropped in the past and people missed it from the drop list or people may have never registered it!

I have picked up probably about 10 .com.au domains which have all made good profit which have been hand regs.

Registering fresh domains is an easy way to lose money, and is how most new domainers bomb out in my view. Takes a huge amount of skill to make money that way and the $20 bets soon add up.

Something like youthchoir.com.au, it was probably a drop from some point in time but I think it is the kind of name that would never sell for much if it ever sold at all because whatever "whatever youth choir" is going to have no real budget for a domain.

Yeah you are right - most of the discussion tend to be about the drops or aftermarket because that tends to be where the big sales, the interesting sales and better names are trading.

However, I would bet that 99% of Dntraders have hand reg's to thanks for the majority of their portfolios and probably the majority of their profit.

I still hand reg names, but only for development, never for flipping.

Youthchoir.com.au sounds nice enough, but it has no real potential for profitable development, and as Snoopy said, any likely buyer will probably have a limited domain budget.

Take a niche that is very profitable, such as insurance, and you'll find that almost every conceivable combination has been registered. There's very little left in that space for hand reg.

I used to look at everything with domainer coloured glasses, from billboards, company names, businesses, tv, radio, house hold objects, news articles - everything. Then would jump on the computer with my keywords, add or remove plurals, numbers, geo locations etc etc, crunch the numbers then register a heap.

It was great fun and exciting when you land a great domain. I remember at one point early on seeing lots of 2 letter com.au domains available, and hesitating! Only for them to be registered a few days later I'm also pretty sure I saw facebook.com.au available, but thought a) dodgy b) just a fad

I'm sure many of us did all of the above too! Much harder game now though, but can still find the occasional gem if you look hard enough

That was a fun thread to read ( I only read up to end of 2009). What people regged; what people thought.

The one that stood out for me was DavidL's archeologists.com.au. How's that directory going David? Ha ha!

AS i said youthchoir was just for my 5yr olds choir and no profit by anyone is expected, the profit will come from an easy to remember domain name so they can spread the word and get more kids involved

That's how I read it. It's a great domain for your purposes. Well done.

Am I missing something here? Wasn't this thread supposedly about unregistered domains that people can make money from?

Some quotes from the original post,

Then after much discussion it gets down to

"no profit by anyone is expected"

So if this thread is about unregistered gems then the example certainly doesn't fit with that.

ok snoopy, i'll give you "no profit by anyone is expected" as a slip up but i don't think by starting a thread on a subject i entered into a contract to maintain a set of criteria about the conversation. I have since corrected myself in that the profit is in the new members revenue.

i'd struggle to find a thread on DNT that doesn't diverge from its original course.

its been a good thread so far, if its not your cup of tea then grab some coffee
