The global governing body for domain names, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has approved the .melbourne domain name after a year-long evaluation, says technology provider ARI Registry Services.

yes, totally confusing. Would compare it to something like .museum. Wouldn't even look like at extension to domainers, let alone the average internet user.

What's the bet that heaps of Melbourne-based businesses and attractions will simply buy a .melbourne domain only for the purpose of redirecting it to their existing .com.au site? So you'll get eurekaskydeck.com.au buying eurekaskydeck.melbourne, fedsquare.com.au buying fedsquare.melbourne, etc.

Maybe someone will register com.melbourne and start up a whole alternative to com.au for Melbourne businesses.

They might give them away.
I doubt that the registry would sell com . Melbourne
