Absolute junk, don't waste your money. I'm guessing they are getting paid to run stories like that.

I read somewhere that .sydney only has ~9000 in its first year, compared to other more generic new TLDs it isn't too appealing other than to protect your brand and redirect it to your primary domain.

The kids won't love em when they figure out the inheritance went on hundreds of .melbourne's and .sydney's.

And a beaten up caravan that went around Australia three times before jack-knifing on the Nullarbor Plains

At least the caravan will be worth $500 to the wreckers.

I find it hard to imagine they'll take over from .au's, but can see many businesses using them as a 2nd choice. Might not work for 'domainers', but maybe for some businesses.

I wonder if many national businesses will feel the need to get the set.

If they had some 99c sales like they do for some other gTLDs, I'd probably get some, but at $70pa it seems a little steep.

I believe in .melbourne and .sydney and have bought multiple domains. The names will be developed for real world bricks and mortar businesses that I own.

Did you buy them in preference to the equivalent .com.au's Simon, or because they weren't available, or as well as, or...? :)

In some cases we already owned the .com.au, in other instances our competitors already owned the .com.au.

2nd choice is a different .com.au in 99.9% of cases.

The average day they seem to be getting 1-4 registrations (not including deletes), despite all they money being spent promoting it,

How much money must have Melbourne City Council have wasted on this so far?

I think good strong single-word names can do very well with this extension, and they will be shorted than their .com.au equivalents. It's all the 2+ word and numerous combinations with these extensions that will fall in a heap. Sames goes for most of the new gTLDs.

Not that I am saying anything in this extension is any good, but the registry goes through and prices the "better" terms at higher rates,

    eg,

    power.melbourne $1350/yr
    poo.melbourne $135/yr
    today.melbourne $270/yr

.tv price structure that ensures investors fail even if the extension was popular. So I really doubt that anyone is going to do well with this extension aside from Ausregistry who I'm guessing has positioned themselves so the downside risk is taken by the government.

You may need to change your .tv analogy .........pretty much all the new new Gtlds are doing premium pricing. A lot of folk would be unaware about the .tv pricing

Which will make for some monumental losses with investors.
