Can anyone advise what the load numbers should be sitting on for VentraIP's servers?

    Seems a bit slow lately.

On a single core system a load average of under 1 would be good.

On a multi core server the 'good' range would be 1 x the number of cores. So for a 4 core server a load under 4 would be good.

Back to the single core system, as I always understood it a load average of 3 would mean the server is working at full capacity - which is not good. A single core server with a constant load average of 3 would need to be looked at in my opinion.

Well in that case VentraIP must have some beefy servers.

I've advised them of a load time above 6 and they advise that "this is a normal load on the server".

    We are getting time outs.

My ticket to them was only because of time outs.

    Hi johno69,

What's the eTicket ID so I can check it out for you?

There is definitely a myth purported by some that load averages should be under 1 or it's bad, but I can assure that that it's not accurate. Load is determined by a number of factors which include CPU cores, CPU utilisation, memory and I/O.

Sometimes the system can run out of memory and begin to use swap, which creates high I/O thus bringing the system load up and slowing access down.

Our L3 technical lead is currently looking over this for you. It does seem as if this server is running higher than it should be, and he actually noticed this earlier today and already put it on his list for this afternoon.

The problem with reseller servers is that it can be dead one day, and busy the next because a reseller has added a new account that's super busy.

But if there are any high hitters on there they will end up suspended by the end of today. Also note that in the next few weeks you will be migrated to our brand new Dell Cloud infrastructure, with SSD drives and i5 CPU's making every node much, much faster.

    Hi smee,

The we have set numbers of how many resellers can be put on any one node, and the ordering system does not allow it to go over those numbers. Only when somebody cancels an account from a server does it allow that space to be filled.

As someone with many websites on my re-seller account - how can I tell if one of them is heavy hitter?

I can see bandwidth and disk use but not cpu use. Even knowing bandwidth doesn't help much as I don't know what is too high.

I would be happy to move sites that require more resources off if they are affecting my other websites.

Most customers would rather pay more and move to a bigger server than get taken off line without notice.

    Hi DrApple,

If you are with us (or any other host that uses CloudLinux), on the side panel in cPanel you can view memory and CPU usage.

With all the outages I see on Twitter and this; doesn't instill me with great confidence in their hosting service.
